Conversations with Nate Cespedes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Cespedes.

Hi Nate, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been drawn to photography ever since I discovered my dad’s Canon AE-1. As a child, I would lift the viewfinder to my eye and pretend to take pictures, imagining the world through that tiny frame. When I graduated from middle school, my parents gifted me my first camera—a Nikon D40—and from that moment on, I began capturing everything around me. Over time, friends and family started asking me to take photos for their special occasions, mostly portraits for graduations and engagements. Eventually, my wife Nicole encouraged me to turn my passion into something more. Starting a business had always lingered in the back of my mind, but it wasn’t until I turned 30 that I truly felt the urgency. I didn’t want to grow old with regrets, wondering what if. That’s when Captured by Nate and Nicole was born.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was directing people. That’s where the “Nicole” in Captured by Nate and Nicole really shines. She has an incredible ability to read people and create a relaxed, welcoming environment during shoots. Nicole’s the creative director of our team, and she’s amazing at guiding moments in a way that feels real. Thanks to her, we’re able to capture those candid, genuine moments that truly reflect our clients’ personalities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What sets me apart is my passion for making professional photography more accessible and meaningful. Growing up, family photos were something we only did once in a while—usually at a Sears or JCPenney—and only for big occasions. I want to change that mindset. Photos don’t have to be just for milestones—they can be “just because.” We believe photos are like love letters to yourself. They celebrate the present, but also become lasting reminders of your journey—your growth, your love, your wins. I take pride in building genuine relationships with my clients so they feel comfortable, seen, and supported—like they have someone they can always come to when they want to capture a moment that matters.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d say consistency is one of the most important qualities behind my success. It’s easy to feel inspired at the start of something, but showing up again and again—whether it’s a shoot, editing late at night, or just staying connected with clients—has made all the difference. I don’t wait for the “perfect” moment or idea; I just keep showing up, learning, and growing. That steady commitment has helped me build trust with clients and improve my craft over time.
