Conversations with Niccole Rumans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Niccole Rumans.

Niccole, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started with my speech and how I said things, it seemed to be not quite right. People used to make fun of me when I was a kid. Then when I got a little older and was in Navy Boot Camp, the girls made fun of me too because I didn’t know the names of certain parts of the female anatomy. I was a quiet kid until I got mixed in with drugs and alcohol. But then when social media was invented and platforms such as Twitter made it possible for introverts like me to let loose, I really let loose! I even pissed off a lot of people because of what I was tweeting on Twitter. Free speech? Not really. I found out the hard way that there were repercussions to what I was posting online. So here is where I plug in my university education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English. It was a very important turning point in my life. Nowadays I choose to be more creative and comedic, entertaining with my words rather than being so hateful. Then as I got older I realized that people are most likely going to make fun of me no matter what I say and I really don’t care. I have the confidence to be silly and comedic.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is no such thing as a smooth road when I found myself literally hitchhiking my way down the Baja Peninsula into Mexico. I was picked up by a nice stranger who just wanted to drink beer while driving all the way to Cabo San Lucas. I was in dire straits to change my life at that time, so I did. I was struggling with drugs, alcohol, bad relationships with men, unsolvable issues with divorced parents, dead-end jobs, and small-town gossip. Yet, I learned how to overcome those struggles and persist with what I really want to achieve in life. And, I think all those struggles have actually afforded me the ability to look at life in a more humbled and humoristic way. Yes, I did some crazy, stupid crap. Fine, it is what it is. But at least I am old enough to put my big girl pants on and keep on truckin like the Canadian Cowgirl that I am.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am most proud of my comedy brand known as ComedyCowhide.com which has slowly evolved over a six-year time frame. It started when I was living in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I started giving invisible tours to invisible tourists as I drove my drink cart around a golf course, pretending to show off the Mexican version of the Grand Canyon. Then I would pretend that I was giving a stand-up comedy show and would record myself at chipmunk level, creating a comedic podcast series with my alter-ego named “Memphis.” When I moved to San Diego I evolved Memphis into an animated show and then into a live-action vampire-witch with a slightly off-centered point of view (Think: lost child of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark meets Ernest Goes Back to Camp, played by Jim Varney). My non-scripted social comedic commentaries as Memphis with a chipmunk voice sets me apart from others.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was an oddball kid growing up, always getting into trouble, always sent to the principal’s office for beating up the boys. I mean, I reacted very emotionally being raised by a single mom with no dad around (a typical story with most girls not raised by their fathers). Every year my mom would move us to another neighborhood so I never really got to connect with anyone when I was growing up. So, when I joined the US Navy right after graduating high school it was like a beacon of light. I barely graduated high school with a 1.8 grade point average. But in the Navy, I enrolled in part-time college courses and made the Dean’s List for having good grades. I knew I had to change my environment for life to get better for me. Life in the Navy was wonderful and I was so happy I decided to enlist in military service. I was always interested in dancing and singing and entertaining, but that dream wasn’t a reality for me back in high school. Today, I am actually creating my entertainment dreams so they are coming true.
