Today we’d like to introduce you to Insomnia. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Insomnia is a three-piece grunge-focused punk rock group from San Diego, California. The band started in 2022 with the release of a six-piece demo EP. Later on, after gaining more experience and a small following, the band went on to record a feature-length album and has since released a handful of successful singles. Insomnia draws inspirations from all facets of rock with a center of attention on bands like Nirvana, Linkin Park, and Alice In Chains. The current goals of the band include but are not limited to continuing to create and release music, expand the fan base outside of San Diego, and represent other local bands on our independent distribution label – Italian Stallion Records LLC.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the beginning, the group was largely unchallenged, mainly due to the fact that we were unfamiliar with the larger world around us. As we progressed and went on to book more and more shows, we found difficulty fitting in with the pre-established local scene. We found that many groups had come up together, leaving us in a position where we had to prove ourselves in order to grab the attention of these bands that had been around for quite sometime before us.
Jumping off of this, we have found it somewhat difficult to navigate which bands have intentions and values that line up with our own. In our time performing, we have encountered a multitude of groups and individuals with unsavory aspirations that we would prefer to distance ourselves from as we do not see this as something we want at our shows.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As mentioned before, Insomnia has numerous releases on all major streaming platforms. We do all our recording in-house as well as production. We find that this capability to have full creative control sets us apart from other groups that may be investing time, effort, and money into larger outlets that may not have their best interest in mind. Aside from this, we have been told that our attitude towards creating and performing is focused on delivering quality. We, as a group, take our music very seriously; however, at the end of the day, we simply care about delivering an entertaining experience that people would be satisfied with viewing and potentially paying for.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
In our time together, we have encountered our fair share of “bad luck.” We have been told time and time again that we are copying stylistic choices made by Nirvana as a means to gain a following. We do not deny drawing inspiration as this is a shared favorite group of ours; however, we do believe that it is unfair to dismiss our creative endeavors as nothing more than an imitation. Despite the negative feedback we have been hit with here and there, this has not stopped us from being discovered by notable promoters and venues that are able to identify the effort that we put in. It is chance encounters such as these that give us the hope and drive to keep going.
