Conversations with Old Lady Mayhem

Today we’d like to introduce you to Old Lady Mayhem

Hi Old Lady, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The IV•VI•III project was born out of a bit of a fever dream of sorts. It’s always kind of existed. People often ask what does it mean and we don’t like to rob the people of their own experience. The artist behind the work OLM or currently know as Old Lady Mayhem was birthed in New Orleans. There will be a visual story told in the future of how all that came to be but as of now it’s still a bit of a mystery (maybe even to them)
There is no doubt that consistency in the work has been the biggest factor, we believe, that has gotten us the respect and following we currently have. Not limiting ourselves to one thing and always experimenting.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth!? No, never. 😂
Life has a way of always testing your discipline or dedication to a project.
Where to even begin as an artist you’re tested everyday. Even the idea of being called an artist is a struggle. Your identity is always in question. Who you once were, living multiple lives. Creating “content” over art. Living in the shadows. Living in your car, hospital stays, near death experiences, run ins with the cops, relationships, travel, you question everything, mostly your own sanity.. its most definitely a Faustian bargain…

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We think we mostly got noticed because of the way we appear in cities across the world. It’s a bit like fight club. We have followers who constantly send us pictures from where they live saying “no way you were in Tulsa Oklahoma!?”
Or “what were you doing in Toronto!?”
Obviously we get lost in a sea of artists in places like NY and LA. But when you start playing in the places where no one goes that’s when it gets fun.
Little winks and nods here and there that’s why we do it. This underground network of people who just “get it”
We like to think the lore and the layers sets us apart but I suppose to get that answer you would have to interview our followers.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Magick, practice, patience, and a lot of luck.
If we told you we made a deal with a goblin or what we believe to be a goblin.
For fame and success would you believe it? Nah neither would we. But that’s what happened. One day we hope to be able to tell the whole story but there are so many things we can’t talk about right now unfortunately/fortunately.
As far as networking goes it’s a hard road. We have a vision and most contemporaries don’t see it (which is ok) so finding other people to collaborate with is a tough nut to crack but we are working on building out a world wide collective. We will see how that takes shape over the next year or so.
