Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Acevedo.
Hi Olivia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis at the age of 8. You may be surprised to hear those kids get arthritis too, but this disease affects 300,000 children in the United States. Growing up, I had no idea how my future would look. I had aspirations of playing the flute and cheerleading. After being diagnosed, I was not sure if I would be able to do the things I wanted to do. I was inspired to compete in the Miss America Organization after seeing a photo of a local titleholder at my doctor’s office. The titleholder in the picture also had juvenile arthritis. This moment was the first time since my diagnosis that gave me hope for the future. As Miss San Diego County, it is my mission to give hope, support, and advocate for families affected by this disease. I have utilized my children’s book, Superthritis Girl, to inspire children with chronic illness to turn their pain into power.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey of writing a children’s book has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences in my life so far. While creating my children’s book, I struggled with many self-doubts. Self-doubt has always been something I’ve struggled with since a young age. Participating in the Miss America Organization taught me that there is nothing to doubt. I have learned how to find things about myself that are my strong points and build on those points. As a Miss America local titleholder, the confidence I have gained has dramatically helped me through my children’s book journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As Miss San Diego County, some of my duties include sharing my social impact initiative, Juvenile Arthritis Awareness, being present and supporting the community, and representing San Diego County at the Miss California competition in June! My children’s book aims to inspire children with chronic illness to turn their pain into power!
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was going to amusement parks with my family! Growing up with Juvenile Arthritis, there were many times when I did not feel like a regular kid. Going to amusement parks and enjoying roller coasters gave me a sense of belonging and commonality.
