Conversations with Olivia Mclaughlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Mclaughlin

Hi Olivia , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have spent the last 26 years of my nursing career caring for adult patients, with a strong emphasis on intensive care. My journey began on the medical-surgical/oncology floors, followed by 21 years as an ICU nurse. The mental, physical, and emotional demands of ICU work eventually prompted me to transition into PACU, pre-op, and plastic surgery, where I focused on post-surgical aftercare for plastic surgery patients. It was during this time that I envisioned creating my own company dedicated to providing exceptional aftercare for patients in need of post-cosmetic recovery care.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the challenges I encountered was leaving the stability of a secure job to establish Nip/Tuck Nursing Aftercare, a service provided by nurses with critical care experience. Patients who undergo extensive plastic surgery, and who are released the same day, often receive only an hour of post-surgical nursing care before being discharged from the surgical center, leaving them to manage their recovery with family members or hired caregivers who may lack registered nursing experience. Acknowledging this gap in care, I committed myself to filling this need to enhance patient experiences and outcomes. The first 72 hours after surgery are crucial, demanding a combination of TLC nursing, critical thinking, and strong assessment skills to ensure a safe and effective recovery.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As the founder of Nip/Tuck Aftercare, I prioritize a collaborative approach to nursing aftercare by working closely with patients and their doctor’s care coordinators to ensure a smooth transition from surgery to post-operative care. I specialize in supporting patients who have undergone procedures such as breast augmentation, facelifts, Brazilian butt lifts, mommy makeovers, and total body transformations. Before surgery, I collaborate with the patient to assess their post-operative needs, coordinate transportation, and manage their aftercare once they are discharged. Our primary goal is to create a serene healing environment for the patient, whether at home or in a hotel, where rest is critical for the body’s healing process. We provide essential nursing services such as dressing changes, incisional care, assistance with daily activities, and, most importantly, continuous monitoring of the patient’s progress to make necessary adjustments in care.
What truly distinguishes Nip/Tuck Nursing Aftercare is our commitment to employing only intensive care and recovery care nurses, all of whom possess advanced skills in critical thinking and physical assessments.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor and building a strong network can be pivotal to your career growth. My advice is to start by identifying individuals whose careers or skills you admire. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them, whether in person, via email, or on professional platforms. Be clear about what you hope to learn from them and why you value their guidance.

For me, what has worked well is showing genuine interest in the other person’s work and being willing to offer help or value in return. Networking should be a two-way street. Attending industry events, joining professional organizations, and participating in online forums are also excellent ways to connect with like-minded professionals. Building relationships takes time, so be patient and consistent in your efforts.
