Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty McEvoy.
Hi Patty, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I attended SDSU and got my degree in Marketing. While there, I interned at the local nonprofit Home Start, assisting with marketing and events. After graduating, I spent a while looking for my first career marketing role until I found the San Diego Model Railroad Museum and my qualifications lined up very well with their needs. The last year and a half here has provided me with lots of opportunities for growth and has been a wonderful way to start my career in nonprofit marketing.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Landing my first entry-level job wasn’t easy. In 2021, with the effects of the pandemic still being felt, I applied to lots of marketing jobs but found they wanted 1-3 years of experience for entry-level positions, or they were commissions-based sales jobs that weren’t what I wanted to do. Needing to work, I got a job at a local restaurant and really enjoyed my time there until this position came along and was the right fit.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As the sole marketing person for the Model Railroad Museum, I wear a lot of marketing and marketing-adjacent hats. For someone early in their career, this has been a wonderful way to learn all kinds of new skills and find out what I enjoy doing most. Surprisingly to me, social media has been a place I can excel. I’ve also been very proud of the graphic design work I’ve done with no formal training.
How do you think about luck?
I think the place where I see the most luck is in timing. I believe things will come at the time they are meant to, and you just have to be patient.
