Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Colula.
Hi Paul, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started DJ’ing as a hobby back in 2016 since music has always been a part of my life growing up. During the lockdown in 2020 I had plenty of time to practice and become more creative & organized with my music library. It’s also when I started DJ’ing for friends and realized I was able to get them out of their head and into their bodies by playing different rhythms, tempos, and genres. I expanded my library from just EDM/House music to Spanish, specifically Reggaeton. Having been listening to reggaeton since 2005 and Spanish being my native language, I was able to build a Reggaeton library rather quickly. Not to mention I already knew who were the top artist along with Reggaeton anthems and must play tracks everyone knows even if they don’t speak Spanish. For example; Gasolina by Daddy Yankee, Rakata by Wisin Y Yandel, Reggaeton Latino by Don Omar and more artist such as Tego Calderon, Hector El Father, and Nicky Jam, to name a few of the artist who paved the way for the new generation such as Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, and Lunay to name a few.
However, As we get older life beings to happen and we question our purpose regarding our future. 2024 was the year I realized I needed to make serious changes to take control of my life since the 9-5 wasn’t fulfilling, it didn’t serve a purpose, nor was it helping me grow as a person let alone financially. I always had a day job, DJ’ing was enjoyable and a hobby, that’s all it was. I quit my job last year in September(2024) and asked myself the following questions: what am I good at? what do I enjoy doing? Can I monetize it? and how? I made a list of several options and my top pick was DJ’ing. So I decided to take a chance and go all in. I have played at fitness events such as the CrossFit Games and restaurants since there’s a market for that in the Latin community. I have yet to play in clubs and I’m quickly finding out how tough it is for a new comer to get booked for those type of gigs. But it all comes down to networking and when no one knows who you are, it can be challenging but not impossible. You just have to pivot and restrategize, which is why I created a Youtube Channel @Housedelperreo for promoters and club management to hear my mixing style instead of taking blind chances. My journey is just at the beginning and I have a long road ahead. But in life we have to fight for what we want and nothing worth having comes easy. If it’s easy, it’s not worth having. Welcome to my journey! And remember, if we can dance together we can put our differences aside and live together.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
