Today we’d like to introduce you to Priya Bhat-Patel
Hi Priya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Priya is a product of the Carlsbad Unified School District and attended college locally at UC San Diego. She holds a Masters in Public Health from the University of Southern California and a Doctorate in Public Health from Loma Linda University. Passionate about serving her community, Priya put her education to task helping to improve overall health and wellness for Carlsbad families.
As a public health expert, Priya has devoted her career to tackling tough issues – from reducing childhood obesity, improving health access for seniors, to expanding preventative care programs. Priya led the statewide initiative to combat rising domestic violence with innovative, comprehensive victim services at local Family Justice Centers in jurisdictions throughout the state of California.
Priya made history as the first Indian American City Council Member in all of San Diego County and will continue to make history if re-elected. Additionally, she was recently honored by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce as an emerging leader as part of their inaugural 40 under 40 list.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
During her first term, Dr. Priya Bhat-Patel had to legislate through the COVID-19 pandemic. She made decisions to ensure the public health and safety of all constituents.

Priya Bhat-Patel is an elected member of the Carlsbad City Council. She is in her second term. Dr. Bhat-Patel is a public health and public policy professional known for her collaborative leadership style. Priya is most proud of the work where she has worked with members of her council with different views to find a common solution for the community. Council Member Bhat-Patel is a young, working class, mom of a young child who is sharing her lived experiences on the Council,
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The most important characteristic for success is the collaborative leadership.
