Conversations with Qi Yang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Qi Yang.

Hi Qi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in a Chinese household was tough, my family members would constantly criticize everything from my weight and my dark complexion, all while comparing me to other family and friends. Their words left a huge imprint on my mental health and how I perceived myself. Back then, I was never overweight, but in my eyes I could always be a little skinnier, and I could always do a little better. These negative thoughts had led me to have low self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and social anxiety. That is when I realized something has to change.

After graduating high school, I moved away to attend school at San Jose State University, where I finally got a fresh start to becoming someone that I loved. That is when I discovered Pole Dancing. At first, I took a few dozen classes, and it was intimidating. Progress was slow. It was nerve-wracking to be in a room filled with people that I did not know and all with varying skill levels. I felt that my lack of confidence due to my fears of other people’s judgment was hindering my improvement. I knew that there had to be a better way for someone like me. I purchased my own pole and was able to practice in the comfort of my own home without worry. I was able to focus on just myself and I improved immensely in both skill and strength, and I was able to get my confidence back.

Pole became my passion, and I want to share that passion with others by creating a safe space for those who are new to the art. Many people feel like they aren’t capable of pole dancing due to not being “strong enough” or “small enough,” but Pole can be for anyone, any size, no matter their capabilities or comfort level. Pole has brought so much joy and meaning to my life, and I hope that through my classes, my students are able to experience the same empowerment that I experienced.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own private pole dance classes have not been as smooth as I would have liked. Pole dancing is often seen as a “taboo” activity, and some platforms do not allow my advertisements. It has been difficult to build a large client base, but I have made great relationships with my consistent students. On the other hand, when I do advertise for my classes, I would frequently receive lewd or unsolicited comments from men. They don’t understand that Pole is not just about bachelor parties, it is an art that empowers women to feel free, confident, sexy, and strong.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently working part-time as a Recreation Therapist, and in my free time I teach private and semi-private pole dance classes in my home. I focus on curating individualized lesson plans based on student’s abilities and desires. I like to collaborate with my students to help them reach their goals, whether it is to become stronger, learn new pole skills, or learn to feel more confident in their own skin through dance. Some of the classes I offer are choreography-based, trick based, or pole flow. For those who wish to experience a new hobby in scenic areas around San Diego or in the comfort of their own home, I also offer outdoor pole lessons. On occasions when I have availability, I can also be booked for picnic and pole events around San Diego.

What I am most proud of is how far I have come. From having such low self-esteem all the way to finding my confidence and being comfortable in my own skin. I love sharing my passion and inspiring others to try pole. Seeing my students progress over time is so rewarding. It brings me so much joy when a student shows excitement after the trick or dance they have been learning starts to click and they are in awe of what they are capable of doing.

I will be having free bi-monthly pole dance meet-ups for those who are interested in pole and want to have fun and try something new!
