Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Canfield
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always gravitated towards creative fields – music, theater, art – from a young age. After finishing undergraduate I started my career in advertising, moving into public relations and marketing after a few years and also obtaining my Masters in International Business from Thunderbird. While in these roles I realized the tasks I enjoyed most were still those that involved creativity and hands-on making of things, so I began my web design and graphic design business as a side hustle. Over the years this side hustle grew into a full-time job which I have since honed into a niche design business focusing on women and minority owned small businesses and startups as well as nonprofits. My goal is to work with people striving to make a positive impact on the world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own business is rarely, if ever, a smooth road! The biggest struggle for me in starting Ramble Design was honing in on the niche that I really wanted to focus on – sometimes it was tough to say no to projects that just weren’t a good fit for my focus and skillset. It’s also tough to maintain a healthy work-life balance when working for yourself. In the early days I would often experience burnout because I just worked all the time. I’m better now at being sure to prioritize balance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Freelance Graphic + Web Designer over a decade of design experience throughout a variety of markets including e-commerce, food + beverage, travel, hospitality, start-ups, non-profits, wellness, and fashion. You can see my work at www.rambledesign.biz. I am a certified Wix Legend Partner and am also Adobe certified. Experience includes contracting directly with businesses as well as with creative agencies.
My unique background in marketing, advertising, and public relations combined with a Masters in International Business from the Thunderbird School of Global Management give me a unique and well-supported groundwork for my designs. My passion comes from helping small businesses succeed. I enjoy focusing on women and minority-owned mission-driven businesses and organizations doing something for the greater good, whether that is simply giving back to the community or trying to change the world.
This year, I am challenging myself to do more illustrative work, some of which can be seen at rcanfield.com. I am constantly learning more and honing my skills in illustration, web design, and graphic design. What I love most about my work is that there is always something to learn! I love being a life-long student.
A project I’m most proud of recently was a illustration and web design project I did for a neuroscientists based in California. You can see the finished product at www.irenesalter.com. She has since turned into a retainer client and I’m creating more illustrations and graphic design projects for her regularly.
Generally, I pride myself on being able to offer not just great designs, but also wonderful functionality and back-end management of the websites I build for my clients. In short, the sites I build not only look great, but also incorporate great functionality such as CRM, e-commerce, membership options, etc.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always open to chatting with people about new projects and collaboration opportunities. I think small businesses thrive best within a strong network of referrals. I love passing on projects that are not my specialty to people I know and trust who will really hit the ball out of the park.
I can be found at www.rambledesign.biz and my illustration work is at www.rcanfield.com. You can also support me via Instagram at rcanfield.illustrator. Referrals are the highest form of a compliment to me 🙂
