Conversations with Ryan Joseph

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Joseph.

Ryan Joseph

Hi Ryan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a creative kid growing up. I loved playing drums and piano and even took drawing/painting lessons for a while. Around 10 years old, my dad let me borrow his Canon Camcorder – an FV30, I believe it was. I was fascinated by how it was able to record life and then play it back instantly. Many films I saw as a kid inspired me to dig into how they were made. Most notably (and stereotypically, haha) Star Wars & Indiana Jones were films I needed to know everything about.

Going into high school, I took film as literature and a video production class, where I took on many assignments most wouldn’t even touch until college. I feel super lucky to have had that opportunity.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge to overcome was when I quit my day job in November of 2019… not too far away from the life-altering event of “Covid-19” which happened early 2020. Productions closed down as the world went on pause, and I had to figure out what to do.

Me and my brother, Nathan, went and DMed dozens of artists, rappers, and musicians to see if we could get some music videos during the off-season.

It worked.

Over the next year and a half, I produced, shot, and edited over 100 music videos. Which fast-tracked my experience and got me wanting to make bigger and better films each time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Cinematographer & Producer. I tend to work mainly on art house narrative projects and unique music videos that have an interesting vision. I love creating layers of texture within the image and utilizing rich colors in my work.

In recent months I’ve also expanded to starting my own production agency where I can work out of moving forward to service larger and more complicated projects.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Oh gosh so many. I honestly had a cherished childhood that I look back fondly upon. Most notably, I’d have to say making a bunch of crappy movies in my backyard with my brother and sister.
