Conversations with Samuel Garcia Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Garcia Jr.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m coming from a really small town up in NorCal called Riverbank. I like to say it’s a place between the Almond trees and Cow Farms. My whole life I didn’t know what exactly what I wanted to do besides that I like telling stories and making people happy. Wasn’t until highschool on my Sophomore year when I found out “Oh I can act and write and it’s fun”. I was always fond of words and the different ways you can express and interpret them. So I said f*ck it let’s pursue this. College was rough and expensive so I joined the Navy. Now I’m just working on my writing especially my poetry. And Every now and then I’m in awe that damn I’m really doing all of this right now.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wish I can say it was a smooth road, but I also can see that I was super lucky and privileged compared to others as well. Trying to find my own identity with my Hispanic Heritage being a second gen Mexican American as well as my sexuality and battling the idea of machismo in Mexican Culture. There was also issues with money and being one of the first of my family, along with my older sister, to go to college and trying to pursue a nonconventional degree that my parents wanted for me. There’s also this inner battle of my own guilt I have with separating myself from my family and doing something that makes me happy and thinking selfishly for my future and well-being.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As of right now, I write short stories and poems and I’m trying to reach out to get a small book of them out to the world. My works described by a few friends are like fever dreams but also heavily rely on imagery and my own personal experiences and emotions. I just write how I feel then with everything I wrote down try and make a story or a picture that other people can see and hopefully relate to. It’s the best way for me to actually express myself on exactly how I’m feeling because it’s extremely difficult for me to vocalize it correctly in the moment. After this chapter of my life in the military is over I want to go back to school and continue my journey as an actor and hone my skills as a writer.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Faith in yourself and that you know what you’re doing as well as that at the end of the day everything with be okay. I also think personal relationships is very important. Without those relationships, you can’t really get where you want. So be respectful and polite to everyone you meet along the way. Being Kind can get you a long way.
