Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandro Costa.
Hi Sandro, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Our story started back in 1986 in San Jose, California, where my Portuguese parents were involved in a Portuguese folk dance group singing for the theatre. At that time, they also involved me to sing and play the piano at the age of 9, and thus, my musical career started. By the time I got into middle school I was involved in jazz band and enjoyed setting up the audio for our school functions where the band performed, thus my love for audio grew from there. In high school, I continued my piano studies and audio for the jazz ensemble and also began purchasing audio equipment. After high school I decided to pursue my interests in audio and attended and graduated from the California Recording Institute. I feel that one of the items that really sets us truly apart from other small business audio production companies is the experience of being a professional musician sitting behind the Audio console. You have some truly brilliant audio engineers out there. But if they don’t understand what the musicians are looking for on stage and what they want to hear, it’s sometimes difficult to understand that without having that musical background. We also pride ourselves in attention to detail throughout the entire event. Every song is different, every vocalist is going to express himself or herself differently with that microphone or musical instrument, it’s my job to make not only the Musician feel confident and sing and perform with emotion but having the audience feeling captivated in the moment and feel the music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Having a small business is always a struggle. With vehicle maintenance, equipment maintenance, etc. Some of the other obstacles have been educating the importance of having an audio engineer for events. Most people don’t understand that it’s more than just buying some speakers and a few microphones and you’re off to the races; that is simply not the case.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Having the right support system in place really makes a difference. My parents have always been big supporters of my musical talents as well as my audio engineering desires. My wife and daughters have also been big supporters as well and I really couldn’t ask for a better support system than all of them at my side. I think it also goes without saying that ALL the bands and artists I have worked with throughout the years and decades also deserve a lot of recognition and love. They trust me every time they hit the stage, knowing that they get 110% dedication and attention at every show.
What’s next?
The future? Well, good health, for starters, that’s always important. We’ve grown every year, and keeping an understanding of why you started the business and maintaining that focus is important for overall growth. Never lose sight of your goals, no matter the obstacles.
I enjoy being a small business. It gives me the freedom to still maintain a healthy personal life with family and friends and not get to wound up and not have time for them.
