Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Krupp
Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After working in banking for over 20 years, I was laid off from my job in the fall of 2022. I decided that instead of brushing off my resume and finding a similar position, I would take a leap and start my own business.
I considered many different businesses and decided that a mobile spray tanning venture would be a great fit for my lifestyle, and allow me the balance between family and work that I’ve been missing for so long.
I have been avoiding the sun, and getting spray tans for over a decade. The woman who I loved to get my tans from had moved a few years prior, so I’d been hopping around from place to place whenever I needed a tan. Unfortunately, I was never satisfied with the experience or the outcome. I felt that if I could make a tanning appointment comfortable, consistent, and strive for an amazing result….I could create a loyal following, and a successful business.
It’s been 9 months since my very first client, and I have been growing quickly simply by word of mouth and repeat clientele.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I was prepared that starting my own business would be a slow start, and I would need to be patient.
Going from my previous career and the steady income it provided, was quite different- but the positives outweigh the negatives.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a professional spray tan artist, I discuss my clients needs and desires before they even show up for the appointment. We have flexibility for when, where, and how they prefer to be tanned. Because I am mobile, we aren’t burdened with business hours. I also have the ability to travel and to do multiple tans at one location. Many clients have tanned with their friends and family before taking a trip or attending an event. I also have clients that need to book a tan for their daughters and feel more comfortable with someone like me coming to their home vs sending her to a salon.
I take my time when applying a tan and use special products that help extend the life of the tan. I’ve been told by many clients that my tans have a pleasant smell, won’t transfer to their clothes or sheets, and last much longer than other tans they’ve had in the past.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Being laid off a year and a half ago certainly felt like one of the worst experiences of my professional life. What I did not realize at the time, was that it actually forced me to reconsider my priorities and make decisions that would create positive changes in my life. I have never felt more content or proud of myself as I do now. I love making women feel confident and beautiful, and I really love the freedom that this business allows me to have within my personal life.
