Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Rose Andrew.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started with a little online social media platform called MySpace. No seriously, I learned how to design and code by making custom profile pages starting in my early teens and was being paid for my work. I self-taught myself Photoshop around the same time and dabbled in as much design software as I could get my fingers on. Trial and error at first, and then I learned how to monetize my skills when I eventually got enough confidence and following. Pretty lame origin story, but it essentially lead me to where I am today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think there is such a thing as a smooth road. And if you think you’ve driven a smooth road at this point in life, then you haven’t experienced life at all. Graduating into the worst recession our country has seen in our lifetime was a tough start, but I was work hungry. I took all of my savings, secured a room in New York (the mecca of graphic design), and said I would figure it out when I got there. And I did. I hustled, I said yes to everything, I learned the hard way and I regret nothing.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I focus in branding and identity design for startups. That means creating the entirety of visuals for a company, from logo to colors and application. I’ve been told sharing my process with clients is next level in terms of explaining my concepts and expansion ideas down the line for their company.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
This whole AI trend is funny. It was a threat for a second until I tried using it and realized how inferior it is to the human brain being able to contemplate and problem solve as opposed to just using open-source internet results to try to find a solution. My industry is safe for now.
