Conversations with Sergei Fish

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergei Fish.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been drawing and painting since a very young age. Later, when I was a teenager, I saw some TV shows and documentaries about skateboarders and punk rockers. They had a lot of tattoos. I thought that it looked so cool, so I decided when I am old enough, I would definitely get one too. Later, in my twenties, I have been working in film production as a set designer. I had such a great opportunity to work with many talented artists, actors, producers, etc. Working with creative people got me thinking how amazing it is to do what you really like and get rewarded for it so well. One day, I decided that I want to become a tattoo artist. I was fortunate to find an apprenticeship with a well-known tattoo artist and learn from him.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Tattooing on someone else’s body is a huge responsibility. The learning process for me was not very bumpy, but still stressful. You have to get it done well and from the first try, there is no second chances. I am extremely grateful for each and every of my customers who had trust in me and let me do tattoos on their skin.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What do you do and what do you specialize in?
I am a full-time tattoo artist. I own a small tattoo studio in Downtown San Diego. I specialize in American traditional and Japanese styles and also do a lot of fine line work. I enjoy working with people and help them bringing their creative ideas to life. I am lucky to have great customers here in San Diego.

Any big plans?
I am currently planning to develop and grow my tattoo studio. I am hoping to move to a bigger space sometime soon and to build a successful tattoo business. I am also planning to go back to school and get a bachelor’s degree in art in the nearest future.
