Conversations with Shannon Camp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Camp

Hi Shannon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a producer, DJ, singer and songwriter originally from Atlanta and now based out of San Diego. A lifelong musician with classical training and a degree in audio engineering from SDSU, I originally discovered electronic music in 2010 and immediately downloaded the software Ableton Live with the dream of learning how to create it myself. After moving to California in 2012, I linked up with other artists and steadily improved my production skills, eventually teaching my first Ableton classes as an intern at Studio West in Rancho Santa Fe. In 2016 I had my first EP release on San Diego based label Hood Politics Records, and continued releasing several well-received house music tracks and EPs and playing local shows and festivals. In 2020, I had my first release with Insomniac Records and mau5trap as part of a collaborative compilation album. As a result, I performed at the first post-pandemic EDC Las Vegas, and my tour schedule took off from there. In 2022, I was listed as an Artist to Watch by both EDM Identity and Nightenjin, and have gone on to release music on some of the biggest labels in dance music including Night Bass, Box of Cats, Space Yacht, CUFF, and more, with support from international artists such as David Guetta, Diplo, Patrick Topping, John Summit, Green Velvet, AC Slater, Kyle Watson, BIJOU, and many more. In 2023, after my debut at the DoLab stage at Coachella, I joined both Kyle Watson and Noizu on tour in several cities across the country. I have also partnered with LP Giobbi’s flagship project Femme House to provide free educational resources to women and LGBT+ artists, as well as co-found San Diego’s own first Women In Music mixer, which is currently growing and thriving. I teach Ableton lessons full time in addition to touring, and have a music studio in Barrio Logan where I help other musicians achieve their goals.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Becoming a music industry professional is not an easy road by any means. I had difficulty being taken seriously when I was first starting out, and sometimes still struggle to find my footing in a cutthroat industry. It was also a learning curve learning who are the best people to trust and work with, and who are not. It’s also a struggle to remain relevant in an industry that is essentially a revolving door of artists and fans, I have to consistently perform at the top of my game or risk being quickly forgotten.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a jack of all trades when it comes to creating house music: I produce the track, write lyrics, sing and record them, and then perform them live during my sets. I believe bringing a live element to a DJ set really sets you apart as an artist. When I played Coachella in 2022, I remember how quickly my tent filled up as soon as I got on the microphone and started singing. I’ll never forget how that made me feel and throw much energy live vocals have brought to my performances.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Tenacity is probably the most important quality a musician can have. I was producing music for 10 years before I made any sort of significant income from it. Another important quality is independence and discernment, and recognizing that you alone are going to be your biggest advocate. Nobody is going to hand you your career on a silver plate (unless you are incredibly well connected).
