Conversations with Shashi Pottathil

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shashi Pottathil.

Hi Shashi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my Yoga and Meditation Center—Shashi Yoga—in 1999, and I have been teaching Hatha Yoga in the Shashi Yoga style ever since. Now, after more than 25 years, Shashi Yoga has grown into an established and recognized style of its own.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not a smooth road. I resigned from my job as Vice President of Marketing at a diagnostic and scientific testing company to start the center. It was not easy to follow my passion, especially with two young children and a family to care for. Yoga was neither a profitable nor a glamorous profession.
But because of my passion and my intention to help people heal their bodies in a systematic and natural way, I felt I had no choice.
When you follow your true passion, time disappears, and even the challenges no longer feel like problems.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I moved to the US, I noticed that many styles of yoga were not truly connecting with ordinary people who had little understanding of the scientific benefits of yoga. I had to carefully craft and modify my approach, removing any religious associations so it could reach everyone.
Fortunately, this approach resonated, and Shashi Yoga has now thrived for 25 years, receiving recognition from many different groups. Recently, I was honored with an award proclamation from San Diego County, declaring October 26th as Shashi Yoga Day.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I have been practicing yoga since the age of five. My first guru was my elder brother, who was an engineer and a martial arts teacher. I remember how he taught me the basic steps of yoga, which shaped my discipline throughout my entire life.
I was the youngest child at home, pampered by my two elder sisters, and I grew up like a close friend with my other brother, who later became an international scientist. He gave me the courage to teach yoga by explaining its scientific benefits.
