Conversations with Shiho Brenner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shiho Brenner.

Hi Shiho, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for kimono began when I was just four years old. Enchanted by the vibrant colors and graceful beauty of my summer yukata, I proudly wore it to preschool—even in the middle of winter—and refused to take it off when asked. That early spark of fascination never faded. Years later, after moving to the U.S. for my education and living far from my cultural roots, I felt a deep longing to reconnect with the traditions that had shaped her identity.

What began as a personal passion blossomed into a lifelong mission: to preserve and share the timeless artistry and cultural richness of the kimono. Today, as a devoted kimono ambassador, I lead hands-on workshops, style individuals for special occasions, and offer authentic vintage and modern kimonos for sale. Through education, fashion, and personal connection, I bring the elegance of kimono to diverse communities—honoring the heritage I first fell in love with as a child.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning the art of kimono became a transformative chapter in my life during the three years my family and I spent living in Japan from 2017 to 2020. Immersed once again in the traditions of my homeland, I dedicated myself to formal training—deepening my understanding of kimono history, etiquette, and dressing techniques. Surrounded by the culture I love, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and connection.

But when we moved back to the U.S. in August 2020—right in the middle of the global pandemic—everything felt uncertain. The world had paused, and so had many of my plans. With in-person events canceled and communities isolated, I didn’t know how to begin building a kimono business. The challenges were daunting. How could I share something so tactile, so rooted in presence and experience, during a time of distance and fear?

Despite the obstacles, my passion pushed me forward. I began offering virtual workshops, connecting with people through storytelling, tradition, and the beauty of kimono—even from afar. I started sourcing kimonos, building relationships, and finding creative ways to adapt my work to a new world. What once felt like an impossible moment became the beginning of something deeply meaningful—an unexpected journey of resilience, cultural pride, and purpose.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a certified kimono dressing consultant and cultural storyteller with a deep passion for preserving and sharing the timeless beauty of Japanese traditions. My work centers around introducing people—especially in the U.S.—to the elegance, symbolism, and craftsmanship of the kimono. I specialize in selling both vintage and new kimonos at a variety of events, offering people the opportunity to experience the beauty of these exquisite garments firsthand. I also coordinate Japanese-themed events, bringing together the cultural richness of kimono, Japanese customs, and celebratory occasions.

In addition, I dress individuals for special events, photo shoots, and performances, ensuring that each person feels the full cultural significance and elegance of wearing a kimono. What I specialize in is more than just the garment—it’s about creating a cross-cultural experience that honors tradition while embracing personal style.

I’m known for my warm, approachable teaching style and for making traditional culture feel relevant and alive for people of all backgrounds. Whether dressing a child for a festival, styling a couple for a wedding, or sharing the history behind the kimono at an event, I aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of this beautiful cultural heritage.

What I’m most proud of is seeing people light up when they first put on a kimono and truly feel its beauty and significance. As an author of children’s books, storytelling is at the heart of all I do, whether through fabric or the written word.

What sets me apart is that I bring the perspective of someone who has lived deeply in both Japan and the United States. I understand the cultural bridges that need to be built—and I build them with heart, humor, and humility. I’m not just sharing a garment; I’m sharing a story, a memory, and a legacy.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
When I was 5 years old, my mother and I participated in the Chigogyoretsu—The Children’s Procession, a cherished traditional Japanese event. During this procession, children dress in beautiful, traditional costumes and parade through the town. The event serves as a ritual to pray for the health and growth of children, as well as to honor and worship gods and Buddhas.

As we paraded, my grandfather, always eager to capture precious moments, took countless pictures of me. I remember feeling frustrated with him at the time, as I wanted to enjoy the experience without being constantly photographed. Yet, to this day, I still have vivid memories of that day—the joy of wearing my traditional attire, the festive atmosphere, and my grandfather’s unwavering presence. Those images, even though they annoyed me at the time, are now cherished treasures that remind me of the deep cultural connections and memories from my childhood.
