Conversations with Shotsbyskylaflame

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shotsbyskylaflame.

Hi Shotsbyskylaflame, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello I’m Skylaflame, a photographer from Baltimore, MD. I embarked on my artistic journey during my late adolescence that was inspired by my close friends during that time. I use my camera as a means of expressing my emotions and experiences, capturing the essence of my surroundings. Over time, my work evolved into a profound exploration of Baltimore’s dual nature—its gritty, dark corners and the hidden beauty within them. Through my lens, my viewers experience a blend of struggle and inspiration, shedding light on life’s complexities and celebrating the resilience of my community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been smooth at all. The road has been marked by doubt, pressure, and seasons where it felt like the vision was bigger than my resources. Coming from East Baltimore, there were limited opportunities, limited access, and a lot of noise telling me what I couldn’t become. There were times I questioned my talent, my direction, and even my patience—especially when progress felt slow and recognition wasn’t coming.

I also had to wrestle internally. Balancing faith, ambition, and reality wasn’t easy. There were moments of spiritual warfare, isolation, and sacrifice—choosing growth over comfort, discipline over distraction. I’ve had to learn how to trust God when the path wasn’t clear and keep creating even when motivation was low.

But those struggles shaped the work. They gave my art depth and honesty. Every setback refined my vision and strengthened my resolve. Looking back, the resistance wasn’t there to stop me—it was there to build me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work lives at the intersection of storytelling, faith, and raw environment. I’m a photographer and creative who specializes in moody, cinematic imagery—work that leans into contrast, shadow, and emotion to tell deeper stories. I focus heavily on portraiture and conceptual projects, often pulling from real-life experiences, inner conflict, and spiritual themes rather than surface-level aesthetics.

I’m best known for creating images that feel intense and honest—work that doesn’t flinch from darkness but always points toward meaning and redemption. Projects like Inferno are a reflection of that: using a darker visual language to explore salvation, identity, and light in places and people that are often overlooked. I’m especially proud of my ability to turn personal struggle into something that resonates beyond me, something others can see themselves in.

What sets me apart is intention. I don’t shoot just to create “content.” Every image has purpose, symbolism, and a message behind it. My background, my faith, and my environment are inseparable from my art—I’m not borrowing a narrative, I’m living it. I aim to be a beacon through my work, creating images that challenge, inspire, and leave a lasting impression rather than just a momentary reaction.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
For me, mentorship and networking are about alignment, not chasing people. When your vision is clear and your work is consistent, the right connections happen naturally.

What’s worked best is showing up with value—being genuinely curious, asking thoughtful questions, and supporting others without expecting anything in return. Real relationships are built over time through consistency, not one-off interactions.

I don’t force mentorships. I let them develop organically with people whose discipline, integrity, and vision I respect. Staying teachable, humble, and authentic has opened more doors than talent alone. The right people connect with who you truly are, not a watered-down version of you.
