Conversations with Skyler Jenkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyler Jenkins

Hi Skyler, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up, I felt like an Average Joe in arts, sports, and academics; yet I still had my mind set on a “traditional, safe path.”

But after failing my best subject, math, I had a “YOLO” moment and asked myself, “What would truly make me happy?”

It came down to two criteria:
be creative and help people.

In high school, I discovered my love for film in a Video Production class, because it combined all the art forms I enjoyed. So I pursued film in college, using my skills to market a sports club I started, and later working as a video production manager for a nonprofit. However, the projects began feel misaligned with my soul…

I had begun filming music videos on the side and soon saw a need for musicians in Philadelphia to be spotlighted. That’s when I left my full-time job to focus on filming music videos, live performances, and photography. Building relationships with artists made me want to find ways for others to fund our collaborations, leading me to create feature-length documentaries about artists and the human experience.

Now, I have a film production company that advocates for artists, a brand-building company helping startups communicate their vision, and a community platform where creatives share their stories of transformation. Since leaving school, I’m grateful to say, “I’ve been living my dream of being creative and helping people.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve been planting seeds to co-write a book with others, with the unified thread being a collection of experiences where our failures have become our greatest teachers…

Failure is necessary in the process- it is the Lessons we need to teach us how to succeed (by process of elimination, at times)…

I’ve embraced failure & always look at what I can learn from it- Overcoming struggles have made me stronger! It has also made my Personal Story more Exciting (so I often celebrate my failures & moments of resilience in my story)

I’ve felt alone, gone broke, been homeless, used & abused for time, talent & energy, lost friends, had panic attacks… you name the obstacle, I’ll most likely have a story of how I tripped over it; but also how I overcame it & got back up to keep moving forward!

Optimism has been my Compass North

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve always dreamed of being a cinema film director, but that typically requires a large crew, a lot of funding, time, energy, and a well-developed script—which I didn’t have the resources for at the time.

That’s when I turned outward and started recognizing the incredible people around me with inspiring stories. I shifted my focus to telling authentic stories about the human experience. My production style evolved into intimate, real documentaries, while also blending the visual storytelling style of 70s cinema to create visually beautiful, creative pieces—films you could pause at any moment and frame on your wall.
