Today we’d like to introduce you to Soulfiya

Soulfiya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my musical career in 2003 alongside the Gideon Band based out of Inland Empire. We didn’t take it too serious but I found that I had an audience and kept pushing. Moves to Florida and later Texas kept my name growing along with many festival performances within the West Indian community. Before I knew it I was signed on a major record label and pursuing my dreams full time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nahhh man the road well rocky but we keep trodding still. I’ve been through likely a hundred band mates and had many set backs but the race is won with endurance, not speed.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a ragga artiste, I make ragga music. That is a style created in the Caribbean that blends Soca, reggae, and dancehall music. I particularly rep for the southern West Indies, I use my Guyanese patois and Soca cadence over any tropical music and create something entirely unique. I’ve been blessed to be on both the Billboard charts as well as the iTunes top 10 many times in my career but the achievement I’m most proud of is being nominated for Reggae Artiste of the year 3 years consecutively.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck. Luck is what we make it. I know smaddy out there has truly gotten lucky, found something valuable, avoided some calamity by grace alone, but for me, everything good or bad that has happened can usually be traced back to something I did or did not do.
