Conversations with Tanika Baptiste

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanika Baptiste.

Hi Tanika, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in the arts as a kid who simply loved storytelling. Mrs. Ohls took us to San Diego Junior Theatre in Balboa Park not too far from Alice Birney Elementary. I attended Birney from kindergarten to 6th grade. That passion carried me into college, where I studied African and African American Studies at UC Davis and discovered theatre as a space that brought my interests in culture, community, and creativity together. After graduating, I worked in youth programs, residential life, and treatment services—roles that strengthened my leadership, communication, and crisis-management skills, and taught me how to support people with care and intention.

My artistic career expanded in the Bay Area, where I began directing, stage managing, and collaborating with companies like Theatre Rhinoceros, Pear Theatre, Marin Theatre Company, and others. Those early opportunities opened doors to new plays, immersive productions, and creative partnerships that shaped my voice as an artist. I found myself drawn to stories rooted in identity, joy, and community—and to the behind-the-scenes work that makes those stories possible.

Alongside my directing and dramaturgy work, I’ve built a career in entertainment and audience experience, including serving as Head of Entertainment for Enchant Christmas. Today, I’m the Associate Director of Audience Services at The Freight in downtown Berkeley, where I blend hospitality, operations, and creative leadership to ensure every guest feels welcomed and every performance runs with intention and care.

My path hasn’t been linear, but every step has been purposeful. It’s been guided by my love for artists, my commitment to community, and my belief in the transformative power of live performance.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. My path has been anything but smooth, and I’m not ashamed to say that. I’ve experienced periods of being houseless, felt the sting of betrayal, and dealt with people who underestimated me, lied on me, or tried to dim my light. I’ve had to walk away from toxic and envious friendships, and I even ended a 20-year situationship that no longer aligned with who I was becoming. There were seasons where I felt painfully lonely, even while working hard and showing up for others.

But every struggle has shaped me. Each setback forced me to choose myself, protect my peace, and keep moving. I survived all of it, and I kept building—my craft, my reputation, and my confidence. Those challenges didn’t break me; they made me sharper, kinder, and more determined. Today, I can proudly say I’ve made a name for myself, not because it was easy, but because I refused to stop.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work lives at the intersection of storytelling, community, and care. I’m a director, dramaturg, and entertainment leader, and I also serve as the Associate Director of Audience Services at The Freight and currently directing The Color Purple at Pittsburg Theatre Company. Across all these roles, my focus is creating experiences—whether on stage or in a venue—where people feel welcomed, seen, and connected.

Artistically, I specialize in stories rooted in Black identity, joy, history, and resilience. I’m known for working with depth, intention, and empathy, and for bringing out honest, powerful performances in the artists I collaborate with. My directing style blends rigorous storytelling with genuine human connection, and my work often centers the voices and narratives that don’t always get the spotlight.

On the operations and entertainment side, I have a reputation for leadership rooted in clarity, compassion, and structure. I manage teams, build systems, guide talent, and create environments where both artists and audiences can thrive. Whether I’m directing a play or running a venue, I lead with integrity and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

What I’m most proud of is the name I’ve built for myself despite every challenge I’ve faced. I’ve created a career where my artistry, my professionalism, and my humanity all matter. And what sets me apart is my ability to hold all of that at once—creativity, leadership, vulnerability, and strength. I show up fully, I uplift others, and I do the work with heart.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality that has carried me the furthest is resilience. I have an unshakeable ability to keep going, even when the circumstances aren’t ideal or the path feels unclear. That resilience shows up in my work ethic, my creativity, and the way I lead—with steadiness, compassion, and determination. It’s allowed me to rebuild when doors closed, reinvent myself when life demanded it, and push forward even when I felt alone.

My resilience is paired with something else equally important: my ability to connect with people. I lead and create from the heart—listening deeply, building trust, and treating everyone with dignity. That combination of strength and empathy has shaped my career,
