Conversations with TARA PEARSON

Today we’d like to introduce you to TARA PEARSON.

Hi TARA, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Tara Pearson and I am the CEO of The Thick Girl Gang. The Thick Girl Gang is a wonderful organization that was created to increase awareness regarding body positivity. But TGG is not about how clothes fit. It is an organization built to empower women of color. The plan of The Thick Girl Gang is to not only decrease body dysmorphic ideas, but to also increase self esteem and change the negative ways we see ourselves.

I launched Thick Girl Gang in the midst of a pandemic and it has became a movement beyond what I ever imagined. I wanted to create a brand that would help women believe in themselves again and to reinforce the beauty within.
I realize that in life, God has a purpose for us all. He wants us to succeed, he wants us be the best we can be! But no matter what happens. No matter where we came from or if we win or lose, you did not wake up this morning to hate your thighs.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggle has been tremendous! Telling people that I want to help others see themselves differently has been always the hardest part. People assume that my t-shirts and coffee mugs should be enough. But the merchandise is designed to compliment the brand and not the other way around.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When I am not working on my businesses, I primarily have always worked in healthcare. I am currently a Contract Manager at a major pharma company and I do budgets for clinical trials. My work helps people get much needed medications through a different method because all other efforts may have failed. But even in that world where I get to help people, it is not enough. I constantly think about how I can use my words to help women mentally and physically get through their issues with their body images. I am known for finding bargains at my local discount stores and showing women looks that work in real life but also on a budget. I am proud to be a curvy, black women who thrifts and can put together an outfit from just about any store! What sets me apart is that I genuinely want to help others see that they are more than their body! We have fat, we are not fat!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My personality is the most important part of my success. I can talk to anyone, anywhere at anytime. My mom always says I am disarming and for most of my life, I never really knew what it meant. But after I started to lean more into growing the Thick Girl Gang, the light bulb turned on. I have the ability to make people relax and just open up to me. I make friends just about everywhere I go and people believe me when I talk about the success you can achieve no matter what size you are or what the scale says!
