Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Cunningham.
Hi Taylor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started dancing when I was just a tiny two-year-old toddler, and that’s where my love for movement and expression began. Dance has always been my outlet — it’s how I’ve learned to find strength, confidence, and joy through every season of life. When I was 17, I was in a serious car accident that changed my perspective in a big way. The recovery process taught me resilience and gave me a deep compassion for others facing physical and emotional challenges. That experience is what inspired me to work with students with disabilities. Today, I’m proud to dance for the San Diego Seals and work as an elementary education specialist, helping students discover their strengths and reminding them that disabilities don’t define who they are. Whether I’m in the classroom or on the dance floor, my goal is to inspire others to keep pushing forward and believe in their own potential.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I truly believe the hard times are what made me stronger. After my car accident, there were moments when I wasn’t sure I’d be able to dance again, and that was really hard for me — dance had always been such a big part of my identity. But through that challenge, I learned the power of perseverance and faith. Every setback taught me something about resilience, patience, and finding purpose even in pain. Those experiences not only made me a stronger dancer but also shaped the way I show up for my students. I want them to see that obstacles don’t have to stop you — they can actually build you into something even greater.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve always believed that purpose can shine through in more than one way, and my work is a reflection of that. I’m a professional dancer for the San Diego Seals, where I get to share my love of performing and bring energy to every game. Off the field, I’m an elementary education specialist, supporting students with disabilities and helping them discover their strengths.
What I’m most proud of is being able to blend both passions — empowering others through movement and mentorship. My journey hasn’t been without challenges, but that’s what fuels my drive to inspire. Whether I’m performing in front of thousands or working one-on-one with a student, my goal is the same: to show that resilience and heart can take you anywhere. I think what sets me apart is that I lead with both passion and purpose, and I try to bring light, joy, and authenticity to everything I do.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve been really blessed with an incredible support system. My mom and dad have always been my biggest cheerleaders — especially during the early days of my recovery after my accident. They never let me give up, and even now, when life gets overwhelming or I start doubting myself, I know I can go to them for strength and perspective. My dance teacher, Miss KC, also played such a huge role in my journey. She never once doubted my passion or pushed away my need to dance, even when my body was still healing. Her belief in me helped me rebuild not just my strength, but my confidence.
And now, in my career as an education specialist, I’ve been surrounded by amazing colleagues and mentors who continue to teach me and inspire me every day. It truly takes a village, and I’m so grateful for every person who’s believed in me, pushed me, and helped shape the woman I am today.
