Conversations with the Inspiring Lanna Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lanna Brown.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lanna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved to San Diego the summer after I graduated from Purdue University to begin my first year of law school. At the time, I didn’t know anyone except my classmates. I wanted to meet people outside of school so I started networking within the music scene in San Diego as I had a background as a DJ in college. I started DJ’ing in San Diego and LA my last year of law school and was able to build a great network.

In 2015, I received my Juris Doctorate (law degree) from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego and received the American Jurisprudence Award for Contract Law.

I wanted to pursue a career that allowed me to use my contract law skills in combination with the network I had built. This lead me to my career in real estate. The contract interpretation and negotiating skills I learned in law school have helped me close some of my toughest transactions! I’ve lived in downtown San Diego the past six years and have become especially familiar with the downtown and urban markets. (And when I’m not busy working with clients, I still DJ!)

Has it been a smooth road?
Haha, between graduating law school, not knowing anyone when I first moved here and realizing I didn’t want to practice law… it was a bumpy road. But – all absolutely worth it.

Starting my real estate business was tough. I’m in a 100% based commission career and like many of my other peers, I’m paying off law school so it was really hard not to focus on the student loan elephant in the room when I first started in real estate. It was and still is a rollercoaster ride. But, when you close a transaction and get to see your client(s) get his or her keys for the first time, it’s a pretty incredible feeling.

Advice for other women who are just starting their journey – don’t take ANYTHING personally, hustle hard, and don’t underestimate yourself.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an agent with Cameron Real Estate, which is a boutique, family run, residential brokerage. We sell real estate throughout San Diego County, however, my niche market is Downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods.

What sets me apart from others in my field is definitely my education. The combination of my experience in transactional law and my passion for being an informed consumer helped me jumpstart my career. Its a big plus being able to understand contract interpretation and negotiation tactics. Because of my education and experience working under attorneys, I’ve been able to complete real estate transactions with the utmost care and professionalism.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Yes – my Mom. My Mom is currently the CEO of Regional Health. Growing up, she has always played a very influential role in healthcare administration. From kindergarten to leaving for college, I was able to watch her grow in her career to where she is now. It was inspiring as hell. To this day, my Mom always reminds me to keep pushing hard to achieve my goals. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for her to look up to and continue to remind me how to kick ass at life!
