Conversations with Tijera Wright-Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tijera Wright-Thompson.

Hi Tijera, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started making charcuterie boards during the pandemic as a creative outlet. It was a way for me to unwind, turn food into works of art, and bring a little joy to tough times. I didn’t set out to start a business — I was just having fun, making boards for friends and family, and sharing them on social media.

Over time, people started reaching out to ask if they could order one, and that’s when I realized this could be something more. I officially launched my business last year, and it’s been a wild, rewarding ride ever since. I’ve celebrated every little milestone along the way — from launching my website to getting my first order through it. Each step has made me feel like, “Wow, I’m really doing this.”

Now, I get to create spreads for all kinds of events — weddings, corporate gatherings, birthdays, you name it. What keeps me going is knowing that something I made can bring people together, spark conversation, and make a moment feel extra special.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road — more like a winding, bumpy one with lots of lessons along the way.

I have a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from San Diego State (Go Aztecs!), which you’d think would prepare me for starting a business, but let me tell you, nothing in those textbooks covered the reality of getting permits, licenses, or figuring out how to legally start a food business. I was completely overwhelmed at first and didn’t know where to start.

One of the biggest turning points for me was being selected for a grant program called COOK Alliance’s COOK Academy. It helped me understand the legal side of things, walked me through the steps to get my Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKO) permit, and really gave me the push I needed to move forward with confidence.

As a Black woman and first-time entrepreneur, I didn’t grow up around business owners or have a roadmap to follow. I’ve had to figure things out on my own — ask questions, make mistakes, and just keep going even when I felt unsure. On top of that, I’ve been juggling a full-time corporate job while building this business on the side, which has been a whole challenge in itself. Finding the time and energy hasn’t always been easy, but the passion keeps me going.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in curated charcuterie boards and grazing tables for all kinds of occasions — from cozy date nights to big celebrations like weddings, baby showers, and corporate events. I focus on creating spreads that feel intentional, elevated, and full of joy.

One of the things that sets me apart is my complimentary cheese lettering — it’s a fun and personal touch I offer on all my boards. Whether it’s a name, phrase, or special message spelled out in cheese, it adds something extra that makes the board feel custom and memorable.

What I’m most proud of, though, is my grit. Starting a business while working full-time hasn’t been easy, but I never gave up. Even when things felt overwhelming or uncertain, I kept showing up — learning as I go, celebrating the small wins, and staying rooted in why I started this in the first place. Every board I create is made with care and love, and I think people can feel that.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people are surprised to find out that I actually work full-time in tech! I’m a Senior Technology Risk Business Consultant, so my 8:30am to 6:30pm is all IT, controls, and systems — a totally different world from cheese boards and grazing tables. I also went to a performing arts high school and have a huge love for improv, so my background is a little all over the place in the best way.

I went to school for business, but I started this charcuterie business because I needed a creative outlet — something hands-on, expressive, and joyful. It’s the perfect way for me to blend structure and creativity. So while my day job is all about risk and logic, this business lets me tap into my artistic side and make something beautiful (and delicious) that brings people together.
