Conversations with Tori Charlson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Charlson.

Hi Tori, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always loved to write, and during my years at my corporate job, I dreamed of somehow writing for a living. However, I never thought this would be possible. I was a psychology major after all. After landing in a job in Instructional Design after many years in an administrative role, I got to do a little bit of writing at work. But the job involved too little writing and too much design for my liking. It just wasn’t my thing (that whole square peg in a round hole thing).

I decided it was time to take the leap. I had been taking courses in the evenings and learning about the world of copywriting, but I had never taken a risk quite like this. I quit my corporate job, and started hunting around on the internet for clients. As I started to gain some momentum, I fell in love with helping people write for their business. I still love it, and I can’t believe I get to do it every single day. I often ask myself, why didn’t I do this earlier? It’s not always easy running my own business, but it’s always rewarding.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest obstacle has been stepping out of my comfort zone to become visible to clients. It’s not natural for me to put myself out there, but I have to in order to make connections and get clients I love to work with.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in writing conversion copy for small-medium sized businesses. I mostly work on websites, but I also write emails, ads, and blogs. I am most proud of the way I approach my work and deal with my clients. It’s all about the clients for me – seeing their businesses thrive and getting to play my part in that.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am the opposite of a risk-taker. I’m a planner by nature, and I like to know how each step will pan out before I take it. I admire people who take risks knowing it could go all wrong, but that’s just not me. So, taking the risk to leave my steady, well-paying job was absolutely terrifying. But I knew if I didn’t try, I would always regret it. So far, I haven’t regretted it in the slightest!
