Today we’d like to introduce you to Vince Freeman.
Vince, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been drawn to storytelling. As a kid, I’d borrow my dad’s camera and convince my friends to make short films with me. I didn’t know exactly where that would lead, but I knew I wanted to create content that moved people.
I studied marketing in college and kept video as a side passion. After getting married, my wife and I started a YouTube channel for fun—cooking, sharing life, and experimenting creatively. It gave me a lot of reps and sparked something deeper. Around that same time, we felt called to move across the country from North Carolina to San Diego. We came with no job, no car, and no plan other than obedience. It was one of the hardest and most refining seasons of our lives, but it laid the foundation for everything that followed.
We found a diverse, vibrant church community here in San Diego, and I started volunteering with the film team. That experience opened the door to years of ministry and creative leadership—eventually becoming the visual media pastor, overseeing a team of designers and filmmakers.
In December 2024, I transitioned out of that role to launch my own creative agency, Damascus Creative. I work with business owners, entrepreneurs, and creatives who are great at what they do but feel stuck when it comes to telling their story. I guide them through a proven process to simplify their message, upgrade their marketing, and ultimately feel more confident about how they show up to the world. Whether it’s building a better website, producing content, or designing a full strategy, my goal is to help people stop spinning their wheels and start building real momentum.
Storytelling is most powerful tool that we have to communicate anything. I find tremendous joy in helping others see the value of their own stories—and using media to amplify it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road—but I’ve come to realize that the best stories rarely are.
When we moved to San Diego, we were stepping out in faith with no job, no car, and no clear plan. It was a season of deep uncertainty. I was unemployed for nearly a year, we ran out of money, and there were moments we truly wondered if we’d made a huge mistake. But looking back, that season stripped away everything we were leaning on and forced us to trust God in a new way. It wasn’t easy, but it built something in us that comfort never could.
Even professionally, the road hasn’t been straight. I’ve worn a lot of hats—pastor, filmmaker, storyteller—and through it all, I’ve learned that success isn’t just about titles or income. It’s about obedience, integrity, and showing up with excellence no matter the size of the project.
Now that I’ve stepped into full-time entrepreneurship, I still face challenges—balancing creativity with business, managing growth, wearing all the hats. But I’m learning to trust the process, stay faithful, and celebrate the small wins. Every bump in the road has shaped how I lead, how I serve, and how I create.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Damascus Creative, I help small businesses simplify their message and marketing so they can grow with confidence. I specialize in guiding business owners through the StoryBrand framework, which helps them stop wasting time and money on confusing marketing and start communicating in a way that actually connects with their audience.
Most of my clients are passionate entrepreneurs who are amazing at what they do—but they struggle to talk about it. That’s where I come in. I walk them through a proven messaging process and then help bring that story to life through things like websites, videos, brand strategy, and creative content. My approach blends strategic storytelling with strong visuals, so the brand feels both clear and compelling.
What I’m most proud of is when a client finishes a session and has that “aha moment”. Seeing how simplicity unlocks confidence and they say, “I finally know how to talk about my business.” That kind of clarity is powerful—it unlocks momentum and provides better results across the board.
What sets Damascus apart is that I don’t just build marketing materials—I help people build belief in their brand. My background in both content creation and communication strategy gives me the ability to see both the creative and the core message, and my heart is always to serve, not sell. At the end of the day, I want to help people defeat the “Marketing Monster” that’s keeping them stuck—and show up with a message they’re proud of.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is the power of obedience—especially when it doesn’t make sense on paper.
Some of the biggest breakthroughs in my life didn’t come from having a perfect plan—they came from simply saying “yes” when God called me to take a step. Moving to San Diego. Leaving a steady job to start my own business. Shifting direction creatively. Every one of those decisions required surrender, but each one led to deeper fulfillment and greater impact.
Starting Damascus wasn’t just a business decision—it was a response to something I felt God was asking me to do. It didn’t come with a clear roadmap, but I knew I was being invited into something bigger than myself. Saying yes meant stepping out of comfort, laying down security, and trusting that if I moved in faith, He would provide.
And He has—sometimes in small, quiet ways, and sometimes in moments that feel unmistakably divine. There have been moments of doubt, frustration, and waiting, but God has used every part of the journey to refine my heart and stretch my faith.
Success isn’t just about what I build—it’s about who I become in the process. The most meaningful growth hasn’t been in my portfolio—it’s been in my dependence on Him. Obedience has taught me that the right next step isn’t always the easiest or the most obvious, but it’s always worth it.
