Daily Inspiration: Meet Adrian Reyes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Reyes

Hi Adrian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been into music and shows growing up, probably most of my youth and “adult” life. Especially hardcore and punk shows in high school. I used to go to shows all the time in San Diego and Los Angeles.

After high school I started diving into electronic music, listening to old school rave and house music. I remember listening to so much jungle for some reason. I thought it was more on the harder side then drum and bass. Then I really started to dive in to Techno specifically. Artists like Mike Banks, Mike Dearborn, Joey Beltram, Jay Denham, Jeff Mills, and Steve Stoll. Most of the DJs I really like are from Chicago and Detroit. Some from Europe and Japan too like Ben Sims, Paul Mac, Ken Ishii, DJ Shufflemaster. Those are my biggest influences as a DJ.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I played to so many empty rooms and open decks just to practice. I didn’t have any gear so I remember going to my friend Miguel Pinedo’s house a few times to play and practice. Miguel is probably the first homie I made when I first started out. You should also check him out, he’s San Diego based.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I DJ and make music. I like playing out what other people aren’t playing. I really like discovering and digging for music. I think that makes you a better DJ compared to everyone else who is just playing the same top 100 charts from music websites. I find it pretty lazy to be honest because there’s so much music to play and discover.

I’m fortunate to play next to some big names in the game, Héctor Oaks, ØTTA, and P.E.A.R.L. I also played in Seattle, WA recently at Kremwerk ( shout out DJ Raine) which is a 3 room club. One of the rooms you have to walk down stairs because it’s under the club. This experience was so insane. It was almost like culture shock because every DJ that I saw that night was insanely good. All the DJ opened up properly and playing things from Acid, Breaks, Electro, Tribal, Jackin. I’ve never seen that before and I wish it was more apparent here in San Diego.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The weather is pretty pristine, I like how you can get anywhere in the city relatively fast, even during rush hour. One thing I dislike is the lack of electronic shows. I feel that there should be multiple good shows every weekend here. I don’t care if its jungle, techno, house, left field, whatever, I just want more proper shows where people can see the diverse genres of Electronic music. I would also like to see more DJs build their own taste and identity instead of just copying what they see on social media.
