Daily Inspiration: Meet Alex Acosta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Acosta.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been drawing almost my entire life. I’ve only been doing art at the Revision studio in Hillcrest for over a year now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish I had known about Revision much sooner. When I began, I didn’t realize they had been in existence since 2017. Before that, I would doodle in sketchbooks. The pandemic was when I really began to embrace Instagram to stay connected with family and friends before restrictions on social gatherings began to ease.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in “zines,” mini comics made with a single sheet of Xerox paper folded into eights.

Some of my zines are about Nora, my original character. She is nerdy, exuberant high school senior who is obsessed with boy bands and likes to spend weekends watching football with her single dad.

I also do pet portraits, commissions for which I offer through the Revision program.

Thirdly, I like to create logos and uniforms for fictional sports teams. Because as a big sports fan, I’ve always been fascinated with the evolution of real teams’ brands.

At least twice a month, I take part in local drink-and-draw gatherings, such as Sketch Party at the Whistle Stop Bar, or Brew Doodle at Kilowatt Brewing’s location in Ocean Beach.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
At the spur of the moment, I like to go bowling. I used to bowl at the Kearny Mesa Bowl for many years until it closed down due to the pandemic. Nowadays, I bowl at the Parkway Bowl.

Pricing:

  • I usually sell my zines for only $2 each
  • Pet portrait commissions start at just $100. But they can be lower depending on your budget.
  • If you like animated cartoons, custom fan art of your favorite characters in my style start at just $5
