Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Fox
Hi Alexandria, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first started crocheting in 2020, pandemic hobby, I gave up instantly. I said this is dumb and not for me. Fast forward to July of 2021 I decided I wasn’t going to give up. I was going to try again. I started making hand knit blankets. Everyone I knew was getting a blanket for Christmas. lol. I had to have made maybe, 15 blankets.
After I got comfortable with that process I switched up to using a hook and smaller yarn. My first project was a scarf for my boyfriend. It was so bad! restarted that thing so many times. I was dropping stitches in some rows adding them in others. It was so wonky! I wasn’t going to let that stop me.
I moved onto beanies next. They became my hyper fixation. January 2022 I had my first sale! A friend from Arizona reached out and asked if I could make matching rainbow beanies for her and her wife. I made so many beanies. I ended up gifting them. It was a great way to learn tension and build muscle memory.
In January 2022 I also made my first amigurumi! I found a video on YouTube and made a little octopus (Hooked by Robin – “crochet kawaii octopus”). Thus starting my journey in amigurumi. I mainly did orders for close friends and family. Once I got the hang of it The Crafty Foxx was born!
The Crafty Foxx became an official business August 1, 2022. During holidays I started selling my work at a local restaurant, Sugar & Scribe. I’m part of the Pastry team there and Chef Maeve has been nothing but supportive. She has helped me learn a lot about being a small business owner.
I now sell at several markets, SeaHive Second Sundays being my main one. I have an online store and I’m currently working on some wholesale accounts. I have regulars now who collect the plushies I’ve made. It makes me so happy to see the joy on peoples faces when they purchase an item. I’ve started creating my own patterns now and I can’t wait to see where that takes me.
My boyfriend, Chance, is the main reason I have a business. He filled out all the forms all I had to do was push accept.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. lol.
I am still finding the balance of having a small business, working full time, and having a relationship.
I struggle with my website not getting as much traction as I would like it to but, I know it’ll get there eventually. It’s hard not to get defeated when a market doesn’t do as good as I thought it would. I’ve been working on taking those “flopped” markets as a way to network and test out new setups.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in amigurumi (plushies).
I will occasionally dabble in clothing or tapestry but plushies have my heart.
I think what sets me apart from others is how much effort and love I put into each item. If it’s not up to my standards I’m not selling it.
I also price my items lower than I should. I’m not doing this for pure profit. I’m doing this because I love how happy my items make people. I’ve had a few people message me and thank me for an item because it’s helped them with their depression and anxiety. I love that. Crocheting helps with mine.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The joy I get from it. I feel like once it becomes a stressor in my life it’s going to fail. I won’t do certain commissions if I know I’m going to hate it the entire time I’m working on said commission.
