Daily Inspiration: Meet Andre Marshall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andre Marshall.

Andre Marshall

Hi Andre, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a Real Estate Photographer living in San Diego, CA. My journey started in 2015 when I was 19 years old. My dad was selling our home in Pennsylvania, and for the first time, I saw real estate photographers professionally photograph a house. I could not believe you could get paid to take pictures of houses! I always loved architecture and photography and instantly knew I wanted to try it as a career. Architectural Digest (AD) magazines and Youtube were my go-to resources for learning this craft. Back then, it was rare to see video tours and drone photography on a listing. I knew I could set myself apart by offering those services as my dad taught me to always go above and beyond for my clients. Before I knew it, I was a full time Real Estate Photographer.

A year later, I moved to West Philadelphia. Go Birds.! I continued shooting in and around Philly for 5 years. I love Philly, but Pennsylvania is where I grew up, and I always wanted to see what life was like elsewhere. In 2022, I packed all my stuff in a 5×8 U-Haul trailer and moved to the desert–Phoenix, Arizona. What a shock that was! It was so hot and dry there that I actually felt sick for the first two months. Starting work from scratch was hard, and I was running out of money. I kept pushing and found new ways to acquire business. Eventually I discovered there was a huge Airbnb market here. I connected with some great people and started photographing short-term rentals all around the Valley. Life in AZ was great. I spent nearly two years there until I decided to change things up and relocate to San Diego, CA.

My short time in SoCal has been anything but mundane. I have found a new passion for automotive photography, learned how to surf, and still continue my work as a Real Estate Photographer.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a bumpy ride, to say the least. Being a freelance photographer is great, but if things go wrong, you are the only one who can fix them. There are certainly a lot of technical issues that can occur. There’s nothing more embarrassing than your camera glitching when you show up for a big photoshoot. Corrupted memory cards, anomalies within the editing software are just some of the issues you have to solve in a timely manner, or it can make you look unprofessional. I’ve done my best to overcome these obstacles and deliver a good service.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Photographer that specializes in Real Estate Photography. I create images with natural light to capture the essence of a home. Using a tripod and photo bracketing allows me to shoot photos even in low-light conditions. Over the years, I have honed my ability to accurately photograph a room and portray its true colors. I believe it is important for potential home buyers to see exactly how the home looks and feels. I am really proud of some of the twilight photography I’ve captured, especially in the Arizona desert. It almost looks like something out of the AD Magazines I used to read when I first got started.

What does success mean to you?
