Daily Inspiration: Meet Angie Palmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Palmer

Hi Angie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From an early age, I felt different. This feeling lead to eating disorders and issues with my identity. In high school, I was dating a much older man, and became pregnant. This pregnancy gave me a reason to take better care of my health which meant to stop doing things that were damaging to my health around my disordered eating. I have always invested my time into helping children in various ways. It is important to me to bring kids the information to be healthy and have self worth around self discipline.
In 2020, during the first few months of lockdowns in California, I was experiencing discomfort and anger at what was happening to our children as a direct result of the lockdowns, and personally what I felt was being taken away that protected my mental health and continued recovery from eating disordered behaviors . Eating disorders are much more about control over one’s choices than they are about the actual food. This frustration gave me the momentum to sign up for a degree in Nutritional Therapy, and finally work towards my passion of helping others with Real Food. When I completed the program, the school featured a woman’s work at graduation that really interested me. I reached out to her and worked in the kitchen program and attended their training academy the following year as a prerequisite of earning my board certification. This program is called School Of Lunch. For the past few years I have been working toward my niche to help families eat better and feel better. People don’t realize how significant food is to how they feel. Most Americans , as high as 93% are metabolically unhealthy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say the road has been smooth. When I was working on my Board Certification , I had the idea I would be working on programs full time for kids in schools. After a few years of donating time to building in this area, I realized the timing isn’t quite right to be able to create massive change. Policy has to change in the form of regulations and the cancelling of longstanding contracts with the sugar lobby and big food. I see these things coming!
One of my biggest struggles has been around learning how to charge for my work enough to make a living. I have had to work on not giving away all this training that I invested time and money for.. People that are not willing to pay for the help they need with nutrition will never be willing to do the actual work needed to make long term life style changes.
My other biggest obstacle was trying to help all types of people and that spread me too thin. My focus now is gut repair and long term illness recovery which includes hormonal issues and autoimmune issues.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When I work with clients on their health, this is customized to the person’s needs and willingness to take action. No two clients have identical needs or results. This makes the work exciting but also can be tricky for clients as we try things based on symptoms and they vary from someone else’s results.
As a holistic nutritionist, I specialize in teaching people life hacks to fit easy sustainable change into their daily lives.
If someone changes too many things too quickly, when life happens with an unexpected loss, the changes are difficult to maintain.
For my clients, their needs vary. Some people want help learning to shop, some want to incorporate fasting into their life for their unique needs, or need a meal plan and cooking support or classes. I listen to my clients for where they are open to changes. When a person has a little bit of success with a new habit, this gives them momentum to lean in to bigger health changes.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can reach me at my site angiesrealfood.com and book an introductory call for free. This time is used to hear what they are looking for. I offer many packages on my site to get an idea of what is included in working with me on a health journey. Classes can be done on zoom or in-person or if they are local to San Diego, I can come to their home for a pantry clean out. very Soon I will be teaching pop-up cooking classes occasionally at my own house for a small fee to cover supplies and time.
I am looking for professionals to support the results the clients are seeking by teaching them how to apply any health plan into their busy lives. I also offer customized nutrient support and can order testing and blood work. Regardless of what health journey a person is on, nutrition can greatly affect someone getting well.
Once a month I offer a free class with a topic. The next one is happening Monday March 24 at 6pm pacific standard time. For now, I am placing these on YouTube at angiesrealfood for later viewing.
