Daily Inspiration: Meet Arlene Ibarra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arlene Ibarra.

Hi Arlene, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a professional photographer for about 12 years now. I started out photographing special events and nightlife in 2011. I was fortunate enough to build a network of amazing and talented friends that included chefs, cooks, brand ambassadors, and bartenders which led me into photographing food and beverage as well as industry events such as cocktail competitions. I found a true love for that area and now my niche is F&B.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been fairly smooth for me business-wise. I’ve worked steadily over the last decade with close friends, and I always try to not only expand my network but to support my friends’ businesses as well. When our pandemic hit that was a huge blow to my business but I still wanted to be creative so I was photographing my takeout meals haha. I also collaborated with my friends DJ Mull, Chris Casinger, and Lance Felix who started a soup and spirits delivery service during COVID. My son and I delivered the meals on weekends which was really fun. We bonded during our drives, and I was happy to drive around and explore the city.

Other than that, business has been steady as San Diego is a great city that always has new and exciting restaurants opening around town. Our culinary scene may be in the shadows of LA, but we have some truly talented chefs and bartenders here!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in food, beverage and special event photography. I don’t overproduce my gigs, it’s usually just me and sometimes an assistant. The food is the standout and I try and showcase the textures in each dish using macro photography to get really tight shots as well as overall images. I’m proud to have both of my children regularly assist me at shoots so not only are we spending time together but hopefully they’re also learning something about the culinary world and what it’s like to be a creative professional. I’m proud to have my son working in the industry as well in Little Italy!

What matters most to you? Why?
Freedom of time is what I determine to be success. Balancing my professional and personal life matters most. I could get wrapped up in work and marketing 24/7 but knowing I can spend time with my family and take them on vacations is why I own my own business. If I can’t take a day off to reset my mind and body, then I’m not going to be at my best and that will hinder my creativity. Taking my friends and family out to visit clients and enjoy their food is also really important to me. Supporting each other as a community is important to me.
