Today we’d like to introduce you to Aryana Mohammadi
Hi Aryana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a San Diego native, raised in Imperial Beach. During childhood most of what I did to pass the time, besides long days at the beach, was drawing. As a child with a vivid imagination, drawing became the earliest outlet for my self-expression as an artist. I’d create stories, characters and worlds of my own simply with pencil and paper.
Throughout childhood and into adulthood I kept that imagination and my passion for art alive, which led me to explore different mediums outside of graphite. It wasn’t long before I ultimately bonded with my favorite medium: acrylic on canvas.
After painting for many years, I focused my time creating art and using social media as a platform to extend my reach. I was inspired to branch out and make connections with other local artists and creatives who shared the same passion for art.
I began networking in the San Diego art community, and made friends with other artists, curators and event coordinators along the way. I was an emerging artist in a community of likeminded creatives, and in 2014 I began displaying my paintings at art shows and galleries across San Diego.
Over the past decade, I’ve had opportunities to showcase my art with established galleries both locally and nationally, at group art shows, auctioning my art for philanthropic events, displaying at restaurants, pop up markets, bars and fashion shows.
Today I continue creating art not only for self-expression, but as a way to share my imagination with the world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I believe that being an artist is never conventionally easy. We tend to be given the stereotype of being personally strange or unstable with our career choice. With those stereotypes being so common there’s naturally a sense of self doubt that caused some obstacles in my creative journey. The journey overall hasn’t been completely smooth, but I’ve turned moments of doubt, fear and limitations into opportunities for improvement. I’ve always lived with a slight fear of others not accepting my vision or criticizing my style if it doesn’t compare to what is validated by the masses. I believe I can speak for other creatives, not just myself, when I say that we’re our own worst critic. Over the years, I’ve learned to find opportunity in those moments of fear and doubt, rather than letting it hinder my creativity. The road got smoother after I began embracing my uniqueness and empower myself rather than allowing obstacles in my journey to stagger my progress.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to experiment with color palettes that both accent and contrast when combined on canvas. I like to imagine which colors and tones I could paint that conveys an emotion that can be felt simply by viewing it. My technique as an acrylic painter is refining the details in my work with lots of layers while experimenting with textures and color overlap. My paintings convey emotion, captures vast sceneries and abstract imagery in bold color palettes; a style that I believe I am most known for.
What sets me apart from others? I’d say it’d simply be the attention to detail in the subtleties of my works. All of my paintings are comprised of individually unique brush strokes, carefully drawn lines and blended colors that is intentionally meant for the observant to notice and admire.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Art, sunshine, nature walks, spending time with loved ones, traveling, being adventurous – it’s the simple things in life that make me happy. Living each day in gratitude is the source of my happiness, and knowing when to seize life moments to continue to improve myself as an individual is an important way of life for me. Choosing a positive and constructive mentality each day, is the way to keep moving forward.
