Daily Inspiration: Meet Aysha Sedgwickbillimoria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aysha Sedgwickbillimoria.

Hi Aysha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi my name is Aysha Sedgwick Billimoria and I’m 23 years old. At the age of 6 I was diagnosed with learning differences dyslexia dyspraxia and ADHD. Even though I was diagnosed at a young age with learning differences school was always hard for me. I was told that I was never going to make it to college which I just recently graduated with honors. Because I’ve always struggled in school, I wanted to make it my goal to inspire other people with learning differences to believe in themselves. I’m inspired to help other students in schools’ settings to not be discriminated against because of their learning differences. I also believe it’s very important to stop labeling people with learning differences as a bad thing because it isn’t a bad thing. Just because I have learning differences doesn’t mean that I’m not capable of having my own life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My life has not been a smooth road there was a lot of struggles that I had in my life. At a young age I had a really hard time spelling. I also had a really hard time reading as well. I also would use to speak very fast to a point that no one would be able to hear me. With learning differences, a lot of times people have mental health issues. so, I use to have mental health issues as well. I also sometimes stumble my words, and I used to get embarrassed when that happened to me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I just started recently working for schools as an aid to help children with learning differences. What I love the most about my work is that I can go and inspire other children with learning differences to believe in themselves. But I got a degree into Human Services because I’ve always wanted to help other people. I’m best known for treating other people with respect and being there for people. The thing that I’m most proud of is that I was told that I would never be able to get a job and now I’m proving people wrong and showing the example for other kids with learning differences that it’s not a bad thing to have learning differences. I think what sets me apart from other people on my job is that I have knowledge about what it’s like to have learning differences and the struggles that they might have.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
When I was growing up, I was always kind to other people. I have so much empathy for people that even at a young age I knew how adults felt. I think that I’ve always had an old soul and was very mature for my age. But I would also have a lot of personality as a child and had an imaginary mind. I would just explore the world and had so much fun whatever I was doing. My interests as a child were reading even though it was difficult for me. I also loved animals from a young age. For the longest time I thought I was going to work with animals. I also was very passionate about doing karate and singing. I also love spending as much time in nature and taking pictures of animals when I was growing up. Also growing up in a very small town going to the beach was something I loved to do. The other thing that I loved doing as a child was traveling. I’ve been to so many countries and I’m very grateful for that opportunity and it’s definitely made me appreciate everything I have. It also makes me feel great to understand other people’s culture.
