Daily Inspiration: Meet Bear Deans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bear Deans.

Hi Bear, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, I started using makeup for Halloween back in Sophomore year of high school. So my love for makeup stems from attempting special effects makeup and slowly over time, I started experimenting with eyebrows, foundation, and eventually in 2018 I started wearing a full face of makeup! And throughout that time, I was uploading videos and pictures on Youtube and Instagram and was pretty stagnant. Then in 2020 when the pandemic hit, I started uploading on Tiktok and grew so much within that amount of time! I upload daily on there and have been able to make it a side hustle!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an African American Man that is not only gay but wears makeup, it has been hard on and offline. I face criticism for following my passion which can be very discouraging at times. Even from my own communities. The LGBT+ and the Black community, I sometimes face hate from which affects me the most since it’s from my own people. But, at the same time the love outweighs the hate. I remind myself what I am doing is not wrong and that I am helping normalize men in makeup just by being myself and it’s honoring!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I am a self-taught makeup enthusiast. On social media, I review new makeup products, makeup tutorials, storytimes, dating advice, etc. I am most proud of the impact I make in the beauty community by teaching and showing confidence and resilience can be achieved by anyone! I feel like my personality sets me apart from most due to me being really goofy.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like how accepting it is here but at the same time, it can be the opposite but it depends on the area.
