Daily Inspiration: Meet Cassandra Mejia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Mejia

Hi Cassandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey as a tattoo artist started from a young age, growing up among artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs in a creative family atmosphere. Being raised in my father’s tattoo shops, Escondido Body Art and Vista Body Art, I have been immersed in the world of art and tattooing since I can remember. As a teenager, I began to take drawing seriously and later ventured into professionally piercing while I continued my art. The idea of tattooing was introduced to me by my father and the encouragement of our shop crew, and instantly I was in love with this new art form. Since then, I have been refining my skills as a tattoo artist, working at the same shops where I spent my childhood days. I view artistry as a way of life, and I’m excited to continue my journey as an artist, drawing inspiration from the culture and environments that have shaped me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As an artist, the early years are always filled with struggles as we are developing our skills. Learning how to tattoo also definitely comes with its own set of pressures, but with consistent dedication to the craft, a point is reached where it feels liberating to trust in your gift. Building a strong clientele can also be challenging, but after 10 years of establishing trust and connections in my community through our piercing and tattoo experiences, I have found that the clients who align with me will always find their way to my chair. I believe that with enough commitment to excellent service and meaningful connections with clients, you can definitely build a thriving career and experience a truly joyful tattoo life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My art began with specializing in realistic pencil portrait art and oil paintings of nature and animals. With tattooing, I specialize in botanical fineline and faith-inspired tattoos. My connection to my spirituality and the healing properties of plants are why they are my favorite subjects to tattoo. My work now focuses toward the realistic black and grey tattoos style, still centered on similar subject matter. I pride myself on my soft, delicate, precise tattoo style and deeply sacred and intentional experiences that I create with my clients. I am most known for these experiences and my gentle approach toward tattoo application, which many clients share they have enjoyed. I believe what sets me apart is my heart for God, creation, and deep respect for the craft. Personally I feel art is therapeutic and can be a wonderful friend and gift in this lifetime, which is what I always aim to share every chance I get.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Being born and raised in North County San Diego, I have grown to love and appreciate this beautifully surrounded area and its diverse communities. We have the privilege of coastal living but also the luxuries of easily traveling to our nearby forests, deserts, snowy mountains, or downtown areas. My favorite part of living in San Diego would be our beach weather, food and art cultures, and close access to Mexico which is where I often travel with family to our homelands. I rarely have any dislikes about our city, but if I had to choose one it would be the expenses of life here. Nonetheless, it is very much worth it to build a career and life here since I believe we live in one of the best cities in the world.
