Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherona Arikian.
Hi Cherona, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
When I was young, I always loved art. You could always find me painting, drawing, or playing with makeup. In high school, I got super into makeup, and I started doing all my friends’ makeup for dances or special occasions. I knew from then on; I had to become a makeup artist. Like most girls growing up in the 2000s, I fell in love with MAC Cosmetics, and I knew I had to work there. I started my makeup journey with MAC a month after I turned 18, and I worked for them for many years. During this time, I was also very interested in tattoos. I got my first tattoo at the age of 14, and yes, my mom wanted to kill me. At 18, I started to get heavily tattooed, and my artist at the time told me I should look into tattooing or doing permanent cosmetics. I finally took the leap of faith and went to permanent cosmetic school and started doing permanent brows, lips, and eyeliner. As much as I loved doing it, I wanted more. I then decided to start my tattoo apprenticeship and loved every second of it. I knew tattooing was my passion and it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Getting into a new career is always hard. There’s a lot of self-doubt, and you need to have a lot of discipline. I had some bumps in the road, but it made me stronger and more confident that this is the career I want.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a tattoo artist, I specialize in fineline and brightly colored cartoon tattoos. I think what sets me apart is that I am not afraid to try different styles of tattooing. I love a challenge, and I never want to stop growing as an artist.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always super spontaneous and outgoing. I loved doing art, and I loved being with my friends. I was always drawing all over my homework, shoes, arms, anything I could get my pen to. I also started getting super into makeup when I was in middle school. I then started to really express myself with my makeup. In high school, my love for makeup and art continued as well as my love for music. My friends and I were always going to shows at Soma, and we never missed a warped tour.
