Today we’d like to introduce you to CovNasty.
Hi CovNasty, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first began singing at age six at my grandmother’s church and began playing piano in middle school as an elective course. In high school, I auditioned for a musical and Miss Kim immediately changed my schedule in order for me to be part of the Boys Show Choir. I had a short-lived attendance at Chowan University in 2008, majoring in Music, due to severe financial hardship which led to a career in the military.
I continued to hone my craft as an artist, producer, and songwriter through self-education. A lot of reading and watching videos partnered with trial and error will teach you a few things. After living Florida, Japan, California, South Carolina, and now Arizona, I released my first single “Heard You Was A Freak” through a popular distributor DistroKid. In April 2021, I filmed and edited my first music video “Text Me Back” in the bedroom of his apartment on my iPhone. My first collaborative work was released on January 20, 2022 titled “Options.”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to get to where I am has most definitely a bumpy one. My first struggle was trying to get the people I know in person, my friends, to listen to my music. Learning who the right people to listen to my music is hard, but learning what my target audience is is even harder. I’m constantly reminding myself that the reason I make music is not just for the music listener; I make music for me. I wanted to hear Queer Music that sounded mainstream and was of a good quality. I wanted to tell my story of heartbreak, love, one-night-stands, etc. The next hurdle to get over was realizing that music is subjective. Understanding that I could hate a song you love and vice versa is something that a lot of artists struggle with.
My biggest struggle at this point is trying to be better than my past self, referencing content and quality of my music. To be clear, making the music I’m has never been the issue, staying true to myself and the stories that I want to tell has been. I’ve noticed it’s easy to say whatever you want over an inspiring instrumental as long as people can relate; however, I want to be able to speak to every situation I either sing or rap about.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I do Air Traffic Control in the Marine Corps, and that’s really what sets me apart from a lot of other artists. It’s a pretty mentally demanding occupation. I am working on finalizing up this enlistment in early 2023, but in every second of my spare time, I am ferociously pursuing a career in entertainment. I sing, rap, write producer, engineer, mix & master all of my music alone. I also create content on TikTok and take a lot of my own photos. I am most proud of my music because it’s what I truly love to do. I know that there are a lot of people out there that do the same thing as me but the real difference between us is that I micromanage my time. There’s never a moment that I am not doing something related to the CovNasty Brand.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
This pandemic literally taught me that your time is expensive. Time is literally worth more than money to me. I want to move correctly and effectively and in order to do that, I need to spend my time accurately.
