Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Avitia
Hi Danny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is one of perseverance, self-discovery, and a deep commitment to making a difference in my community. It begins with my early years, growing up in an unconventional family dynamic. I was adopted and raised by my aunt, who worked tirelessly for the DMV. My father, an attorney, and my aunt remained supportive of me despite their divorce, but as a child of divorced parents, I witnessed struggles that shaped my understanding of family and resilience.
It wasn’t until the sixth grade that I learned I was adopted—a revelation that turned my world upside down. This discovery shook my sense of identity, and I went through a period of rebellion and turmoil. I missed school, fell into the wrong crowd, and created chaos for myself and my family. My teenage years were marked by stints in rehab, incarceration, and foster care. At 18, I aged out of the foster system with no clear direction and little support. Homeless, grappling with my sexual identity, and trying to find a purpose, I felt lost.
But even in those dark moments, I knew something had to change. With the help of family friends, I found stability—a job, my first apartment (a humble one-bedroom downtown), and a glimmer of hope. It wasn’t easy, but I began to rebuild. I enrolled in community college, initially unsure of what I wanted to do, switching between psychology, political science, and sociology before finding my passion. Despite the challenges of working multiple jobs and navigating the pandemic, I graduated from San Diego City College in 2021 with an associate’s degree.
Throughout this time, I held various jobs—selling candy, managing an ice cream shop, and even working in rehab facilities. But none of these roles truly fulfilled me. I wanted to make a lasting impact, so I applied for a canvasser position with Alliance San Diego. That job changed my life. Talking to voters about civic responsibility and working alongside passionate individuals gave me a sense of purpose I hadn’t felt before. It ignited my love for politics and advocacy.
Over the years, I worked on campaigns for local candidates and ballot propositions, learning the intricacies of grassroots organizing. I realized how even one person could influence change, and I wanted to do more. In 2016, I helped launch an initiative aimed at creating forums where voters could connect with ballot measures and candidates. These forums weren’t large, but they sparked meaningful conversations and gave people a chance to engage with their communities.
My political journey took a significant turn in 2019 at the Women’s March. I heard a powerful speaker who inspired me with her vision for justice and equity. She announced her candidacy for mayor, and something compelled me to step forward. I volunteered for her campaign, eventually becoming her campaign manager—a role I took on with no prior experience but boundless determination. That campaign taught me the highs and lows of politics, the power of resilience, and the importance of staying true to one’s values, even in the face of adversity.
By 2020, I had worked on multiple campaigns, from state assembly to congressional races, and navigated the unique challenges of running elections during a pandemic. The experiences shaped my leadership style and gave me a deeper understanding of the issues affecting my community. At the same time, the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests reignited my passion for social justice. I launched an initiative called “Paint the Town With Love,” turning boarded-up businesses into canvases of hope and solidarity.
In early 2021, I faced a personal tragedy when my brother passed away from a fentanyl overdose. Grieving but determined to honor his memory, I threw myself into work, leading recall efforts, graduating college, and enrolling at San Diego State University. That year, I also became president of the Downtown Democratic Club, bringing together community members and leaders to address critical issues like immigration, education, and youth engagement.
Building a sense of community at SDSU was another challenge, but I found my footing by 2022. Graduating recently, I continue to grow as a consultant and a leader, working on building bridges between people and ideas. I remain committed to creating spaces where individuals can connect and take action, striving every day to make an impact.
My story is far from over. Every step in my journey has taught me the value of perseverance, the importance of service, and the power of believing in yourself—even when the odds are against you. From being a homeless teenager to a community leader, I’ve learned that no matter how difficult the path, it’s possible to create the change you want to see in the world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life has been anything but a smooth road for me. My journey has been shaped by challenges at nearly every turn—from being adopted to discovering my sexuality to finding my place in the larger fabric of society. These struggles didn’t just come early in life; they’ve resurfaced at different stages, shaping my character and my outlook.
In sixth grade, I learned I was adopted—a revelation that rocked my understanding of who I was. Along with this, I discovered my birth mother had been deported to Tijuana, Mexico, and my birth father was incarcerated. These realities left a deep mark on me, forcing me to confront feelings of loss and identity at a young age. As a teenager, I faced additional struggles that defined my formative years: time in rehab, incarceration, a year in a group home, and navigating the foster care system. By the time I aged out at 18, I was homeless and grappling with my sexual identity, barely coming to terms with it.
But the challenges didn’t stop there. In my 20s, I experienced profound personal losses, including the pain of losing my brother and the deportation of my uncle. These moments were some of the hardest I’ve faced, but they also became catalysts for reflection and growth. While I wouldn’t wish for those experiences, I wouldn’t trade the lessons they taught me. They helped me see that challenges aren’t something to avoid or resent—they’re tests that build resilience, foster perseverance, and prepare us to lead.
Even as I built my career, new challenges emerged. As a young political consultant, I’ve faced skepticism from older adults who were hesitant to take direction from someone they perceived as “just a kid.” Gaining their trust and proving myself has been an uphill battle. Additionally, working in politics means confronting the influence of big money and corporate interests, especially when those forces oppose the candidates and causes I support. I’ve also encountered resistance within my own party for challenging the status quo. Changing the course of entrenched systems is never easy, but I firmly believe it’s necessary.
We’re in a crisis of leadership in this country. Too often, leaders are cherry-picked by special interests rather than being developed to truly represent their communities. My goal has always been to fight for authentic leadership—leaders who inspire, challenge the norm, and have a bold vision for the future. This has made me outspoken, and while that has occasionally gotten me into trouble, I’ve learned that sometimes you have to stand your ground and say the hard things.
The obstacles I’ve faced—whether personal, professional, or systemic—have shaped me into the person I am today. From the trials of my youth to the challenges of building a career in a field dominated by powerful interests, every struggle has pushed me to grow. It’s through adversity that we truly thrive, shine, and discover the best within ourselves. Challenges are essential to leadership—they push us out of our comfort zones, force us to confront and solve problems, and provide a deeper understanding of who we are. Without them, I wouldn’t have the strength, creativity, or vision I bring to my work today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Progressive Leadership Consulting is my personal consulting firm, where I focus on building and supporting leaders who inspire meaningful change. Right now, it’s just me managing the work, but my vision is to grow this into a firm with a dedicated team that not only provides consulting services but also develops workshops to empower the next generation of leaders.
My consulting work specializes in leadership development for candidates, elected officials, and young people considering public service. I help individuals define their leadership style based on their values and mission, teaching them how to build meaningful relationships and lead with integrity. Leadership, like education, is a lifelong process, and I emphasize that there’s always room to grow and improve. In addition to one-on-one consulting, I aim to create workshops tailored to the challenges of modern leadership, emphasizing adaptability and ethical decision-making in a rapidly changing world. Whether it’s helping a young candidate prepare to run for office or guiding an elected official to be more effective and compassionate in their role, my goal is always the same: to inspire leadership that prioritizes people and values over special interests.
What sets Progressive Leadership Consulting apart is my deeply personal and mission-driven approach. I understand the challenges of leadership, not just as an abstract concept but through my own lived experiences. Leadership isn’t just about holding a title—it’s about building relationships, embracing accountability, and continuously striving to be better. In a time when many voters have supported authoritarian leadership, it’s critical to redefine what good leadership looks like and teach it as a skill that evolves with the times.
I’m most proud of my commitment to creating space for underrepresented voices in leadership. Growing up in the foster care system without a mentor shaped my perspective and drives me to give back by mentoring and advocating for foster youth and young people. Leadership isn’t just for those in power—it’s for anyone willing to step up and create change, and I’m proud to help people discover that potential within themselves.
Progressive Leadership Consulting isn’t just about helping people win elections; it’s about building ethical, value-driven leaders who can navigate the complexities of today’s world. Whether through consulting services, workshops, or civic engagement programs, my mission is to inspire individuals to lead authentically and responsibly.
Beyond my consulting work, I’m deeply involved in civic engagement through organizations like the San Diego Downtown Democratic Club, where I serve as president, and the Uptown Democratic Club, where I am vice president. In these roles, I work to promote Democratic values, engage voters, and organize educational workshops featuring speakers from diverse sectors such as small business, journalism, and national organizations. These efforts aim to inspire and educate residents about democracy, the political process, and the role they play in shaping it.
Leadership isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you build. It requires honesty, reflection, and a willingness to grow. My consulting firm and my work with the Democratic Party are all about creating opportunities for people to engage with the political process and step into leadership roles. If we focus on educating and empowering individuals, we can create the next generation of leaders who will fight for democracy, transparency, and ethical governance.
Through my work, I strive to give back to the community that shaped me and create pathways for others to succeed—especially those who, like me, didn’t have mentors or guidance when they needed it most. Leadership is more than a profession; it’s a responsibility, and it’s my mission to inspire others to take that responsibility seriously.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is leaving this world better than I found it and living each day with no regrets. These two guiding principles shape how I approach life, my work, and the impact I want to have on others.
The idea of leaving the world better off is rooted in the belief that we have an immense opportunity—and responsibility—to grow as a society. There’s so much we can do to improve life for everyone, especially for those who are most marginalized and underrepresented. Right now, we’re living in a time of deep division, where it feels like people can’t agree on much. But I believe that meaningful progress comes from facing our disagreements head-on and having the tough conversations. It’s not about “my way or the highway”; it’s about how we work together to build a future that benefits everyone.
To me, this means creating a society that truly supports people at every stage of life. It means ensuring our kids have an education system that empowers and inspires them to dream big. It means building a social safety net that protects our most vulnerable so no one is left behind. It’s about fostering understanding and collaboration between communities that may see each other as adversaries and finding common ground where we can grow together.
The second principle, living each day as if it’s my last, keeps me grounded in the present and focused on what truly matters. It’s about lifting others up and striving to be the best person I can be—not just for myself, but for my neighbors and my community. Life is short, and we aren’t living it fully unless we’re embracing each moment with purpose, kindness, and determination to make a difference.
I believe in a world where we can move beyond division and create something greater together. A world where we focus not just on our individual needs but on the collective well-being of all. That’s what matters to me: helping to build a society that is happier, healthier, and more compassionate—a society we can be proud to pass down to future generations.
