Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Mary Castellanos.
Dr. Mary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
About 12 years ago our family, the Cardenas Rodriguez family of San Diego, decided to start a non-profit foundation to help serve underrepresented students and their families with scholarships, food, clothing, etc. Our family settled in Barrio Logan in the early 1900s, and many of us have become educators. We have now funded over 90 scholarships, and we hold an annual holiday event for children and their families.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Raising money has been a struggle. We have had donations from friends and family members. We have made other monies through partnering with a golf tournament, hosting a wine tasting, selling food, inviting an author to speak, a collaboration with Born Free Cycles, and our major fundraiser… a 5K Walk a Thon.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am Dr. Mary Castellanos, an educator, counselor, psychologist for 40 years. I am part of this beautiful organization that is uniquely made up from family members working together for a greater good. I was born and raised in San Diego, and our families instilled in us at an early age, to give back to our community… and that is what we are doing.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
We continue to work diligently on making money. We hope to fund many more scholarships as our funds increase.
