Daily Inspiration: Meet Janine Rose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janine Rose

Hi Janine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a multi-instrumentalist artist and creative entrepreneur here in San Diego. I am a lifelong musician and performer, making “music you can swim in.” In 2021, I started Jean Audio, an independent audio production house that serves as an umbrella for all my creative ventures.

I’m originally from New York (from a big, loud, Sicilian family) and grew up here in San Diego (East County). I found my way here today through songwriting, I fell in love with writing and producing music in college and have never looked back. From planning DIY tours across the United States to getting sync placements for my music in ads and television, I have explored every part of the music and audio industries throughout my 20s and am now entering my 30s honed in on the parts I love most. Jean Audio, named after my late grandmother with whom I share a name, is the culmination of a decade spent finding myself as an artist and a person. The pillars of my work are: uplifting diverse stories and underrepresented voices, creating art and events that help people come home to themselves, and making audio education accessible and individualized.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road here has not been smooth, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Being an independent artist and creative entrepreneur are two of the most rewarding and most challenging career paths–mostly because they are widely regarded as “not serious” career paths. A life in the arts is usually a life of inconsistent pay and consistent hard work. The struggles I’ve faced on this path have been mostly financial, as there is so little funding that goes into the arts and arts education. Things like explaining to my loved ones that this is not a hobby and consistently researching and applying for new contracts and clients are exhausting. It can feel like an endless carousel of working tirelessly and not seeing fair compensation for it, but the moments of clarity make it worth all the struggles. Watching an audience be moved to tears at a show I’ve sound designed or hearing an audience sing along to a song I’ve written at a show are moments I live for. Making art is who I am, so struggles be damned! (can I say damned?) 🙂

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I run an independent audio production business, so I’ve had the chance to work on everything from theatrical sound design and live sound mixing to narrating audiobooks and producing music, so I’ve built a pretty diverse skill set when it comes to audio production. In addition to that, I also teach audio production to musicians, voiceover artists, and aspiring audio engineers, which has been such a rewarding part of my work.

When it comes to my music, I’d describe my style as “music you can swim in.” It’s a mix of dark, sultry vocal riffs and haunting piano melodies that pull you in and create an immersive experience. I love performing live and working on my own artist project, but I’m also really passionate about developing emerging songwriters and recording/producing local artists at Amplified Studios in Carlsbad.

What I’m most proud of it the diversity of my work. The through-line in all of my work is helping people come home to themselves, but that’s taken the form of songwriting, event production, sound design, audiobooks, and more. This is also what sets me apart from others, the wild range of my work, all the various shapes and iterations of it. I spent years hating myself for not being able to fit neatly into a box or niche and now I know that is, in fact, my strength.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Affecting positive change because that’s all we can really hope to do in this life. I want to leave the parts of this world I touch better than I found them.
