Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Witty.
Hi Jason, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Jason Witty. In 2015, while I was a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. For a time, I lost the use of my right arm, but through medical treatment, exercise, proper nutrition, and returning to training, I was able to make a full comeback. I truly believe that Jiu-Jitsu played a major role in my recovery. When you train, the adrenaline response helps quiet the immune system, and that allowed my body to begin healing.
In 2023, I earned my black belt under Joel Tudor of Surfight. Two years later, in 2025, my partner, Marine combat veteran Jason Swanton, and I opened Ramona American Jiu-Jitsu, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing small-town, community-based Jiu-Jitsu to an industry often dominated by large, for-profit franchises.
Our mission is to make Jiu-Jitsu accessible to everyone and to create a place where people facing difficult or overwhelming circumstances—whether physical, emotional, or personal—can find strength, confidence, and healing through training. We want to help people become the best version of themselves, both on and off the mats.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all, but its those struggles that make it memorable and give you confidence.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Outside of my school I am a software engineer working for companies in the southern California Area and participating in open source projects. One that I am particularly proud of is socktop, a remote monitoring agent.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t think of it like that, life is a wave that you just need to ride.
