Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer DeCarlo.
Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I first trained as an artist. After earning an MFA from UW-Madison, I got a job at a photography gallery in Chicago- Schneider Gallery. When I moved west, the artist I’d come to know asked if I’d represent them here. I loved their work and our rapport, but I thought it would be crazy to try. Then, I found a little space on the second floor of an old factory, then full of artist’s studios, galleries, and other creatives. My writing gig for AIPAD (Association of International Photography Art Dealers) could cover the rent, so I signed a lease.
I ran shows for six years before moving out of the area, but now I’m back and working as a private dealer, showing at art fairs. I’m just back from THE PHOTO SHOW, presented by AIPAD in NYC’s historic Park Avenue Armory. We presented works by local San Diego artists as well as artists from across the US and Americas.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have learned to stay plastic- we have had to move, shift, change, adapt. Our approach has changed over time for reasons that are personal and universal- changes in my partner’s career that forced five cross-country moves since 2011 or common challenges faced by all like Covid. Nothing is the same today as yesterday, we move with time and circumstance, like the artists we represent.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We champion contemporary artists making work about our time. We work with national and international artists, and champion those making art to serve a higher purpose.
What are your plans for the future?
Big changes for San Diego followers is we are now private dealing and attending art fairs. We miss having a physical space, but can do more leg-work for artists and bring them to a broader audience than a physical space can serve.
We are available by e-mail and phone. Our freedom from the white cube of a gallery means we can be in the community and attend more art events.
Plans- we hope to do some more 2-person shows online and at fairs. It can be a fun way to draw out unique and harmonizing ideas.
