Daily Inspiration: Meet Jose Rico

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Rico.

How has your experience been collaborating with other artists?
I have been surrounded with musicians from a very young age, I took a couple of piano, flute and violin lessons when I was young and so they were some of the artists I first interacted with at the beginning, my uncle and grandfather had a band and I was there helping to load and unload the equipment, I was there for the rehearsals, the sound tests, the instruments, set up and everything else, I even had to be DJ in a club when I was around 18 because my uncle couldn’t make it that day, that was my first time being a DJ, when I was the singer in a punk rock band, we played in a party, we played in family gatherings, we played in a local auditorium and we were interviewed in a local radio, I have worked with actors in a couple of short films and feature films, I have written songs in collaboration with other songwriters and I am sharing ideas about film scripts with other writers, I have talked to directors about my involvement in some of their projects as an actor, production assistant, composer, and all of these experiences have been productive for both parties, I believe I have abilities needed for creating a successful project, so overall working with other artists is a great joy, everyone talking about ideas, projects, previous work, everyone creating something, this keeps my mind engaged, and it is an amazing experience.

What is your dream project?
I have a couple of them, in music composition, I’d like to create an album with complex songs that have intricate orchestral instruments that convey a strong intense sound, something that could be used in a drama, horror, or mystery film.

In acting I would like to have a role in a mystery, horror, or intense drama, a movie that can be recognized of great quality, I am taking acting and theater classes to be able to be part of a project of that magnitude.

In writing and filmmaking, I’d like to create a great script for a mystery, horror, or drama, a film that can leave a strong feeling in the audience, I already have a couple of stories written that still need to be developed into a script and I am taking filmmaking and screenwriting classes for this to eventually make it happen.

In singing I’d like to write and record a song that conveys strong mental images and emotions to the listeners, I’d like to also create an album of world covers, I already have created a list of possible songs to work on.

What are your ultimate career goals?
My ultimate career goals have to do with being able to share my ideas with the audience, to be able to be identified thanks to a strong brand that represents who I am, what I believe in, and the messages I want to convey, to be recognized for the work I do as it been of great quality and originality, having awards for it, been able to maintain with it a lifestyle where I can keep learning, practicing, improving and creating, and to be able to use this brand and influence to support social and health causes.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists based on your own experiences and learning?
First, I would advise people who are in the beginning of their journeys to never stop developing themselves as a person, and then to constantly be looking for opportunities to learn about the arts and to be attentive to discover what they like or have more ability to do in that process, to be understanding and compassionate about themselves, because it is the norm not to know what to do, where to start, falling, to be put down, not be supported, might even be laughed at but as long as you have an idea for a project or you see yourself doing something just give it a try, and start where you can, you might find a big opportunity right away but the small steps are necessary, adapt to current circumstances, sometimes you have to be learning, sometimes you have to be doing, to not forget to try to balance your life and work, one cannot give true satisfaction without the other, temporarily maybe I will work but eventually the consequences of ignoring this attempt to give necessary time for each area of your life will show up, and it might be too late to do it then, so  just keep going and the farther you go, the more you learn and are attentive to finding yourself in the process the more you will be able to refine your scope and eventually find the originality, your essence will be portrayed in your work, so in that sense it is a must to stay true to yourself.
