Daily Inspiration: Meet Kay Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Black.

Kay Black

Kay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story began in my last year of Grad school. Working towards my Masters in Social Work at SDSU, I had my first opportunity to write a grant for The Blue Heart Foundation. The late founder, Tracy Morris, gave me my first job and really where I found my love for organizations that helped children.

Since then I’ve supported grass roots organizations with grant writing, program coordination and consulting services. My largest project was Spring S.T.E.A.M Resource and Career Fair. A multi-generational initiative emphasizing the importance of Blqcl representation and inclusion in STEM while providing resources the entire family could benefit from. This project was a continuation of the mini-STEAM Fair in 2022. The fair took place during a Wakanda Forever Premiere event I hosted in 2022. The event was to celebrate the film and highlight the representations of Black scientists and creators using real individuals from OUR community. A night to simultaneously celebrate Black/African culture, community and Tech.

Spring S.T.E.A.M Resource and Career Fair took place this past April. It successfully impacted over 1500 youth and families. An initiative to bridge the gap in STEAM education for youth and families of underrepresented communities bt providing free resources and sn engaging educational experience. Spring S.T.E.A.M was also recognized as an inspiring event that impacted young minds and contributed to a more inclusive future by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Council President Pro Tem Monica Montgomery Steppe (D4).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Far from a smooth road, launching a project of this magnitude from scratch was a monumental challenge. In my experience, I’ve seen many things happen with fewer resources, but I was determined. The biggest struggle was convincing companies and organizations to support these initiatives. It was an uphill battle, sadly, because in San Diego, there’s not a lot of support and even less funding for advancing Black and POC communities in STEM education and careers. I would say I received over 100 “No’s” before I ever saw my first “Yes.”

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My passion lies in youth advancement, whether that’s through securing funding to help a non-profit expand its mission or curating spaces where underrepresented youth can thrive. I believe the future belongs to those with the power to change it, and lasting impact starts with children. My work is mostly freelance, and I would love to find an organization whose mission matches my passion to call home. Until then, I believe I’ll be led where my talents are needed and entertaining the idea of creating my own non-profit. Currently, I’m focusing on sharpening my skills, increasing my network, and obtaining a few certifications to expand my repertoire.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
This year, I am honored to be a nominee for Rise San Diego’s 2023 ILIA (Inclusive Leadership in Action) Award. This organization does amazing work, so being acknowledged is truly exciting.

In more good news, I’ve finally reached my goal of securing over $100,000 in funding awards for non-profits and small businesses, a goal I set during college.
Some fun facts about me: I am a retired veteran and an amateur astronomer (I cherish my telescope). In surprising news, I’m currently working on a scholarship program that provides financial support to youth pursuing higher education in STEM fields.
