Daily Inspiration: Meet Kelly Spoon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Spoon

Hi Kelly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My Journey into Service and Advocacy
Growing up in San Diego, I was surrounded by a strong sense of community and an understanding of the importance of giving back. My mother, Roberta Spoon, instilled in me a deep appreciation for women’s history and a commitment to doing what’s right. She led by example, teaching me that service isn’t just an act—it’s a responsibility. That foundation shaped my lifelong dedication to public service, social justice, and working to uplift those in need.

For many years, my career was centered around supporting people in business in an administrative and business operations role. I thrived in helping organizations run efficiently, but over time, I realized that my true passion lay in supporting individuals who were working to shape the world through campaigns, policies, and community engagement. I transitioned into working with leaders and changemakers, focusing on the power of advocacy and systemic change to create lasting impact.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside incredible, trailblazing women who have not only influenced me but have also broken barriers and paved the way for others. Midge Costanza, a fierce advocate for equality and a trailblazer in politics, taught me the power of persistence and using one’s voice to challenge injustice. Bonnie Dumanis and Lynn Schenk, both remarkable leaders in law and public service, demonstrated the impact of strong, principled leadership in shaping policies that create lasting change. These women, along with my mother, shaped my perspective and gave me the courage to pursue work that aligns with my values.

In 2012, while working on a campaign for Bonnie Dumanis, I met Teresa Smith, who had just founded Safe Parking, a program designed to support individuals experiencing homelessness while living in their vehicles. Her vision and passion for addressing homelessness in a dignified, solution-oriented way deeply inspired me.

Fast forward to 2018, after wrapping up another campaign, I found myself at a crossroads. I was ready for a change—something more hands-on, where I could directly impact people’s lives. When I saw an opening at Dreams for Change, I was thrilled at the opportunity to work alongside Teresa Smith and an incredible team dedicated to responding to the urgent needs of our community. Making the transition into homeless and low-income services was one of the most fulfilling decisions I’ve made. Every day, I witness the resilience of the individuals we serve, and I’m constantly inspired by the unwavering commitment of my colleagues who work tirelessly to create real change.

This work isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. It’s about lifting people up, providing dignity and support, and advocating for solutions that don’t just address symptoms but create pathways to stability and independence. I’m grateful for the journey that brought me here and for the people—past and present—who have shaped my path.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but every challenge has shaped me. In 2007, when my daughter was in 8th grade, I became a single mother. Balancing career and parenting was tough—I made mistakes with work-life balance, often putting my job ahead of personal time. Over time, I had to do the emotional work to heal myself and strengthen my family relationships, learning to prioritize what truly mattered.

Shifting from business operations to campaigns and advocacy came with its own struggles—uncertainty, high-pressure environments, and navigating the realities of systemic change. Entering homeless and low-income services required even greater resilience, as I saw firsthand the gaps in support systems and the stigma surrounding poverty. The work can be emotionally exhausting, but the resilience of the people we serve keeps me going.

At Dreams for Change, the challenges are constant—shifting policies, funding struggles, and crises like COVID-19 forcing us to adapt overnight. But despite the hardships, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. Each obstacle has reinforced my commitment to advocacy, dignity, and real solutions for those in need.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
One of my greatest strengths is my ability to remember people and build meaningful connections. This skill allows me to bring the right people together—supporters, partners, and community—creating opportunities that drive real change. I take pride in amplifying the mission of Dreams for Change, ensuring our work is recognized and continues to grow.

I’m most proud of how we use storytelling to not only raise awareness but inspire action. Whether it’s sharing a success story, engaging with supporters, or highlighting the dedication of our team, my work is about celebrating the impact we make every day and ensuring that no one is overlooked or forgotten.

What sets me apart is my ability to bridge people, resources, and ideas, using communication as a tool for empowerment and connection. At the heart of everything I do is the belief that when we lift each other up, real change happens—and that’s the work I’m honored to do at Dreams for Change.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I believe that real change happens when people come together, and there are many ways to work with me and support Dreams for Change:

✅ Collaborate – If you’re an organization, business, or community leader looking to partner on homelessness solutions, financial empowerment, workforce development, or advocacy efforts, I’d love to connect. Whether it’s through joint initiatives, resource sharing, or community events, collaboration strengthens our impact.

✅ Support Our Mission – Donations, sponsorships, and grants allow us to continue providing safe parking, job training, and essential services to those in need. Every dollar goes directly to empowering individuals and families on their path to stability.

✅ Amplify Our Work – Share our mission, tell our stories, and help spread the word! Whether through social media, networking, or advocacy, raising awareness helps us break down stigma and drive meaningful change.

✅ Volunteer & Engage – If you’re passionate about helping others, there are always opportunities to lend your time and skills to support our programs.

Most importantly, let’s connect—I love bringing people together, finding creative ways to support our community, and celebrating the incredible work happening around us. If you’re interested in working together, feel free to reach out!
